Great idea Doc!

That reminds me of something I was thinking about: A Win32 executable that would scrape some latest news headline sites and download the top articles as text. Have it save to a PCLINK: directory, and then an automated script could run on the Atari to pull the latest news onto the board.

Possible?

Like my boss says... all things are possible. It is just a question of the resources to be spent (manpower/infrastructure/etc) justifies the returns.

The windows side is easy. Even I could do the data scrape and save to txt with windows PowerShell scripts, or bash script... even without PCLINK, and inject the txt file into an ATR mounted on a PC... or emulator has H: too I guess.

And - is there a PCLINK driver for sparta 3.2/3.3? Pro doesn't run well under SDX - I recall hard drive corruption ensuing...

Yup SDX is deep in hate with PRO and vice versa....

I think the pclink driver might run on 3.2 or 3.3 sparta though I am not sure.... I could extract it out and and give it a shot, I can't believe it would be beyond the powers that be to make sure and do it 100 percent correct for us though....

Board is down for a few minutes while I move some files around to make space.

Edit: 7363 Free Sectors now. Unfortunately, those are 256 byte sectors instead of the 512 byte sectors that SDX does.

Upload, Please!

:)

You looking for anything in particular? PM me.

Can we talk 850 and drivers?

You've all heard it... I can't get a driver to work with my 850. My 850 sometimes works... It worked and now it doesn't etc etc..

cut to the chase, leave it off up until you are ready to load the driver, run the cartridge, or run the terminal.

OR use an R:BIN (quick answer, it's usually the same as the rom but in binary or program form)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why? The reasons are many these days...

Polling boot method is one. The Rom in the 850 is another. The Handler is another factor. DOS. Oh yeah and let's not forget the Terminal program!

These can be an interconnected mess leading people to lose their mind or think it's broken. I've been brought a lot of 'broken' units that work perfectly for me. But why?

1 Different DOS different handlers. I kid you not use the handler recommended for the DOS you are using. Handlers are not all equal and are not written proper but get the job done.

2 an 850 incorrectly polled at bootup can set it in modes where it won't talk to even the best drivers (Bobterm included!) Let Sparta 4.49 have at your 850 and you will get a device doesn't respond situation even using the supplied RS232.COM or Bobterm!

3 the handler doesn't call the rom using the already online poll method but rather uses the initial os poll method for booting from the 850....

4 the terminal doesn't know how to link and unlink the handler (Bobterm while not perfect does this very well however)

5 The 850 has one of the variant version of rom that doesn't behave as expected.

While I normally don't have any issues... I know when using a certain setup or DOS to just leave it off till I am ready.

So if you keep trying different drivers and DOS types and think it's all random, it's not... There is a reason for why it won't cooperate...

turn it off while the computer is still on, count to 17 or 23, turn is back on. Try your handler, cartridge, terminal again. You just might find your 850 is perfectly fine.. and you are online

The 850 is capable of more than what folks have knowledge of today. Some things are lost to time. It's actually a very nice interface all things considered. Due to it's multiple methods of being employed it gets a bad rap. Truth is the shame is ours for forgetting and not having kept all the information, software, revisions, and notes.

Hi guys. My board is temporarily down because my landlord (as mentioned in base #13) threw a fit and pulled my Ethernet cable out. Hopefully he calms down soon.

I'm on here now because I hacked up a little WiFi connection using an extra WRT54G I had. Not close enough to the Atari for a cable, though.

@Tillek: Yes, exactly this. We just need 2 programs out of this databank:

https://atariwiki.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=Action#section-Action-StillMissingGraphicsUtilitiesLibraryAndShapeEditor

We already have green lights from the Wilkinsons and Clinton Parker to upload this to the Wiki. But it seems to be lost in time, like tears in rain. :-(

You wouldn't happen to have the filenames associated with these packages, would you? Maybe that would make searching for these easier.

Hi JP,

So sorry, sadly not. :-(

We may can just rebuild it from:

Graphics Utilities Library and Shape Editor

to the old suffix: 8.3

So, maybe this leads to: GUL.com ; SE.com ; SHAPE.com ; SHAPEED.com ; GRAPHUL.com and so on...

We just know, we are at the final goal, when the screen matches to the pictures below.

Where did the screen shots come from (since you don't currently have the program) ?

Yeah, PRGE is a great event. Have you gone before?

They are from a source from the East Coast, but the source only has these pictures, not the software... Very sad. :-(

In 2016 I was in Portland, but very short, just to pick up Kevin for Seattle for the Wilkinson celebration. Great city! Hope, there will come a time to do this again. :-)

Thank you for looking up in the BBS. :-)

Yes, however, the module cannot easily be separated from my BBS because it includes some other customization (e.g., part of the BBS' Windowed menu code is there).

This does give me an idea of creating a stand alone module to do it. Moreover, I think I can create a module that can also display ANSI graphics for other files like the main menu. I am in the middle of another project now, but I will put this idea next on my list.

The nice part is that once you have this capability, you can use ANSI graphic drawing programs to create your screens. I created my title screen with "The Draw!" back in the 90s.

how is this coming along?
