FWIW, I have done most of my buying and trading on eBay or locally (as we have some fantastic new/used videogame stores here). I used to do some minor trading on the newsgroups back in the day (specifically the alt.binaries.emulators.tg16 newsgroup), and I've been on eBay since around 1997 or 1998.
