MAME problem here...

As you probably know, Liberator has the option to skip levels up to Level 22.
However, whenever I play Liberator (set 1) on MAME, after the open space part (intermission at start of game and every 3 planets), the game simply does nothing for a couple seconds (shows the rotating planet and score, but no player ships), then does a soft reset and everything is fine. This goes for starting levels 19 and 22.

Don't know if this has been reported yet, but I just want to know whats going on.

This is a known bug for this game. It is a regression from version .37 and hasn't been fixed yet.

It seems the simplest solution for you would be to pick up revision MAME .36 for just that game and then you could play it all the way through.

Ahh thank you for the tip! I am finding it more and more useful to use specific versions of mame for certain games.

Well I downloaded the latest mame, and it STILL ISN'T WORKING despite it saying Mr. Giles modernized the LIBERATOR driver. So to hell with that shit! I decided *NOT* to wait any longer.

Since I have been experimenting around with DosBox the past several weeks; I said what the fuck, it just HAS to work. And so it does! I got Mame 0.36 running perfectly with DosBox. Yeh, and emulator within an emulator! And it seems to pull full speed as far as I can tell. On my 1.7GHz Pentium M Centrino workhorse. I played all the way to Level-27 before I had to get going.

So the solution seems to be an older version of M.A.M.E. And since it's dos only, well then -- Use DosBox!

Therein lies the issue.. the problem with this bug isn't in the driver itself, but in a component which the game uses.
The bug report itself has some answers as there was some research done last year to determine that it's an issue with the sound chip implementation.  The second note states pretty well what the issue appears to be.

It's a matter a finding someone who knows the chip well to be able to come up with a solution which doesn't break other games (in this case, Tempest doesn't work at all with the reverted code).  I have no doubt that someday it will be fixed.

You've found a solution in your case - but to get upset at people for not being able to fix a regression is a bit disheartening, to be honest.  I often use DOSBOX as well and have found it to be more than adequate for a even a marginally obsolete machine to allow playing old MAME versions without issues.  Very useful for regression testing as some bugs have been around for well over a decade.

Ohh you all read me wrong. with reason. I have absolutely nothing but the utmost respect for all the M.A.M.E. team. I followed it since the very beginning. I have little idea how it all works, I just turn on the switch and start jammin' and that's good enough for me. I have several versions of mame set up just for that reason. I just never thought to use DosBox to do the older versions. Cool!

This is now working!! Liberator has been fixed. I started out on level 19 and worked all the way to 24 where I got bored and fell asleep. It had something to do with a Pokey routine and/or some funky conflict in a 17/9 divide routine or some other shit.
