Questions about some finds

I saw a bunch of 8 bit games at the local goodwill today. I picked up the Ace of Aces for $3.99 because it was in a really good looking box with the manual.

I also saw a bunch of games on disk in their boxes in similar condition for $4.99 or so (stuff like ultima, atari basic, a flight game, etc.)

So the questions...Did I waste my cash for Ace of Aces? Picking up an XE or 8 bit has always been on my list if I saw one out in the wild. I figured that if nothing else, I could use it for trade bait or just ebay it if I really needed to make the space.

Also, are the 8 bit games on disk worth bothering with? I know that disks can degrade over time which is the main reason that I passed on them. If they are worth saving I'll pick them up for trade.

Well its all up to you... are you willing to invest the time and a few $$$ in a disk drive if you don't already have one? Do you have the deskspace for the extra device (I know a disk drive is not a big footprint, however I've seen desk space on some classic gaming/computing people and space is a premium when you've got 3,4 or more consoles all setup with their various accessories)

The carts are clean and simple, however not all games are available on cart, Ultima is a killer RPG game and you'll find other games on disk that are more indepth, store your last place in the game, high scores and so forth... so its all up to you and how much you're willing to invest in the 8bit or if its just a casual/occassional system you play games on and might focus more on other systems.

Video61 (www.atarisales.com) has been working with a lot of authors to get rights to their old disk based games and has been converting them to cartridge format and he has a large selection of superb games and utilities you're not going to find anywhere else.

Happy 8bit gaming!!! :) :D 8)

I have disk based games that have been used for YEARS, over 15, and they still work, so most likely, if those are new, or even if they are used, they probably still work. I'd make back-ups of them as soon as possible though. This can be done several ways, software back-up progams like the chipmunk, hardware in the disk drive like the Happy upgrade, or the way most people today do it; APE interface and software that comes with it (prosystem).

I second that Ultima is a great game and worth the price for it, complete.

Ace of Aces I enjoyed very much back in the day, although I had it on disk. It's available on disk and cartridge for the 8-bit and the Atari 7800 also has it on cartridge. Probably available on the C-64 too.

I always say that if you have the cash on hand, pick it up if you're not sure. You never know when you'll run into an XE or 8-bit out there. I picked up some Genesis games today because they were cheap and I may get a system someday and also for trade bait. I had hoped Double Dragon 5 for instance was a good game for bait but apparently its not very good. Oh well, its on the trade list anyway.

That was mostly my thought. I have no room to get into old computers again (I'm working on making room for the games as it is.) I was thinking of picking them up for trade bait, but just wanted a general feel for what the folks collecting the stuff thought about it.

I have a lot of old disks for the PC that have suffered data degration, which was the other reason I was asking.

And yeah, Ultima was a lot of fun...had it for the PC at one time, probably still have the disks for it.

I picked up the Ace of Aces because as a cart it should be fine and it's in near mint condition. :)

Thanks for the comments. :)

I don't really like picking up trade bait for systems I don't already

collect for. I don't want to spread my funds too much and I have no

idea what is worth the trouble of getting for many systems.

Most of the stuff out there is hardly worth the few bucks you'll pay

for it. BUT!!!!

Whatever you do buy the copy of Ultima. You can easily sell that

on ebay. If it has the map with manuals you can easily get $20-100

on ebay depending on which game it is. It is probably the most

collectable computer game series.
