I like the Coleco style, So I voted for them. It's nice to see something that sets them apart.

But really this poll is kind of pointless, because just like the previous XM poll about the features to be included or not, the people who supported the losing side of the poll will bitch and moan about authenticity and polls being unfair, until they drive everyone nuts and get their way.

This place never changes. :D

1: I'm looking forward to the XM, in part, because it has a wider cartridge slot. I'll be able to play Imagic games with ease.

2: There was some concern about printing "XM only" on the labels, somethingt so that those without an XM would be forewarned not to use the game without the XM (because the game wouldn't work)

3- If the new shells are going to be used exclusively for XM games, wht not make the carts wider than the average cart? They wouldn't fit in a standard 7800, but would fit in the XM with ease.

Just brainstorming...

Or have a Tab on the inside of the cart opening and a slot in the cart guide for the XM only games.

Thing is, the games WILL work on a standard 7800, you just won't get the sound. Granted, that's something some will see as annoying, but at least the game will be playable until they can get the XM.

Depending on the game you won't get graphics and sound and it might also crash. It depends what the developer is using in the XM and how they handle the lack of an XM in the system.

I voted for non-springdoor Atari shells (assuming you put the holes for the fingers on the back of the shell, not the label side) as this should make for a cheaper shell, and existing labels should work fine. Margins are already very small for the things we do, so keeping costs down is very important.

Do you have an idea of how much these will cost? I mean, I really hate cleaning up old shells, but if these cost me $5 a piece, I will just keep cleaning old shells.

These are my thoughts exactly. I would rather have cheaper games than different shells with higher prices. In the end, it does not make the game play any better.

I always liked the Atari style cases better than any 3rd party case (2600 or 7800). Everything else just felt more cheap by comparison, with no exceptions. I've always wanted to put some of my favorite 3rd party games in Atari shells, so I would DEFINITELY be majorly turned off by anything other than Atari shells for the 7800 games.

Well, the early, Atari Inc. cases are definitely high quality- but the later Atari Corp. (ie 7800) cases w/o the door and with the slots under the label seem really cheap (no door, offset tabs that end up leaving slots under the label, etc.). By comparison, the Coleco style cases are real hefty when you hold them in your hand.

I'm all for something Atari-specific, but whatever the outcome, just make sure there are no slots on the front for the label to get poked through...

I second that. I always handled mine very carefully because of those holes, but most of the flea market finds have the labels mashed into them to some degree.

Actually, the same thing happens with DVD cases. It seems every time I go to buy a used XBOX game and have picked out a pristine case with DVD insert, the cashier (after opening the case to put the disc inside) makes sure to mash the case closed RIGHT ON THE HOLES! It drives me crazy. The case survived all these years in great shape only to be screwed up by a mindless cashier.

The fewer indentations or holes under a label, the better.

I think the idea is to run them as an "extra" at the same time he is working on the 1200XL top case. I'm not sure how they charge, but he might be able to work it into the design as an extra cavity in the mold, for the same price. This way the project becomes a shared risk investment. I agree that there are probably enough carts to last well for the hobbyist scene, but it would also be nice to know that there exists a permanent means to provide legacy parts into the future if just as a physical record for historical purposes.
