GameGirl420
i've beaten the original Castlevania only twice on NES(i agree it's really hard, took me like 4 hours)....there's a trick i do when i get up to Dracula tho. Just stand in the middle of his coffin (that's the easiest place to dodge his fireballs trust me) and from there it should be very easy, good luck. StanJr
Chronicles is also somewhat rare these days and fetches a good price in some markets. Its alright, but overall the original is tops!
toptenmaterial
Well, I'm going to be shipping off my Castlevania cart as part of a trade on Monday. This weekend will be my last attempt. It's do or die!
YAGRS
Good luck. Took me years to beat this game because of the Grim Reaper. Then, I found out that he can be extremely easy to beat with the right special weapon. As others have mentioned, once you get the game's patterns down, it actually isn't that difficult.
Austin
Anyone want to place bets on whether he succeeds or dies?
toptenmaterial
Anyone want to place bets on whether he succeeds or dies? Well based on past experiences, I think winning would be the upset of the century (or at least the past 25 years). I have a massive amount of respect for those who have beat this game. I still consider it retardly hard. Edited June 4, 2011 by toptenmaterial
StanJr
YOU CAN DO IT!! Keep the Holy Water!
Bloodreign
The Reaper hates getting wet. Remember these words. Drac likes Boomerang type things with triple shots.
flynnz
I just recently beat the game. It was one of those games that I could never beat when I was younger. I remember me and a friend made it to Dracula and just left his NES on for days trying to beat him. (with no luck). We even tried using the NES advantage slow-mo feature hah. So when I started casting games on JTV I figured it would be fun to try and finally beat the game live. Took a while, but I was able to do it. Was one of the best moments of my gaming life Video below of my victory hah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3x118mewTw
Blarginatorr
Made me just wonder. Is it a "honor" thing or something, or why dont people simply spam Holywater on the second form, if they think dracula is hard? Having a multiplier pretty much makes dracula freeze and just slowly take damage.

I didn't know until one of these recent CV threads.

(assuming you have x3 )

(assuming you have x3 ) Yeah, I've always used the boomerang until recently. It wasn't until about a month or two ago that I found out you can bait Dracula to shoot straight, you just have to wait until he opens his cape before jumping and attacking at him. You don't even need the boomerang if you do that correctly. It makes the battle soooo much easier! I'm gonna beat Drac's ass tonight!!!! YOU CAN DOOO IIIIIITTT!! toptenmaterial
Alas, not yet. Ax is the proud new owner of my Castlevania GBA cart (along with some other stuff, in exchange for an INTV II and a bunch of carts). That being said, I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel. I'm going to download the Virtual Console version and take it from there. Sorry to disappoint you guys!
StanJr
No disappointment, we are all just very excited for you to beat it. It is such a great game! Go man, go!
Austin
Well, if anything, you might have an easier time playing it on the big screen.

Austin
What the hell? I didn't know about that. It looks pretty cool. Like a light gun shooter meets one of those arcade samurai games where you wave a controller to use a sword on-screen.
toptenmaterial
Hi everyone! About 3 years and a half ago, I was going through a separation and living at a motel in Maine. Wasn't exactly loving life. To gain some purpose, I attempted to beat Castlevania, with the help of some folks from this thread. I was not successful, but it was fun as hell and really helped pull me out of a slump. I will be trying to beat it again now. I think I'll start by reviewing the posts and videos that other AAers have made and posted on this thread. In 2011, I was playing the game on a GBA SP (with the Classic NES Series cart); this time around, I will be using a hacked PSP-3000, without cheats. Wish me luck! toptenmaterial
So I'm posting this now after my first run of CV in many a year. I played the PSP. It was a little awkward at first but I soon got used to it, in fact the button layout is pretty good for NES. Still, I think I'll pick up a GBA SP soon. I got about as far as I expected to: I died at the mummies, after nearly killing them, having made it there with very little health. I had one more life after that but the short whip is pretty useless on the bone pillar enemies. I predict more ass kicking progress in the near future.
