This game is tough, but it's not impossible.

I have tips going off in my head, would really help in stage 3...
I discovered a nifty trick. Also with the key stage, also a few nice findings!

I'll maybe let a little time pass, in case an expert of this game wants to chime in first. (IF YOU'RE OUT THERE POST SOME TIPS)

This tips I have gathering up, I will be getting down on paper, and
posting them.

Should improve the game and the competition for all.

Coming soon...

This time I won't try again, because DK Junior isn't one of my favorite games. Also, I won't try Hard Mode - Game 1.8, or beat JacobZu7zu7 score.

This one doesn't interest me much, so far. Maybe I'll be more intrigued after Jacob (or whoever) posts their tips. ;)

Ok...
Time to put in some scores.
Vocelli:
Game 1: 80000
Game 8: 9200
Getting that monkey off of the vines in time to jump on the third level is a pain for me.

Regarding tips, I'll say this much: You can sort of control the behavior of the snapjaws. It's all in how you're positioned on the vines. I got no tips on the 3rd stage, other than learn to time your jumps over the snapjaws.

Level 1

The second vine out is tricky to reach! I missed my jump many times, 1 tip to always reach it is ...press/hold fire button and hold down the right direction until you get hold of the vine.

Level 2

Starting level two, that bird is right on your monkey hiney, to avoid getting hit by the bird do this... "before your level begins" hold down right on joystick THEN hit the fire button.
DON'T PUSH THE FIRE BUTTON FIRST!

BIG LEVEL 2 TIP
Once you get hold of any vines under the keys, the bird cannot hurt you!! Doesn't matter if your feet or a** is touching the bird! Just don't slip off the vine now. This technique helps when you are up against fast BLUE chattering teeth.

EARLY GAMING TIP
Sometimes just pushing the button in an emergency can launch you up on a vine safely. Always wait for the bird to fly passed you before dropping off the vine, also wait for chattering teeth to clear passed too. If you are under the KEY but teeth are looming down, just tap the right or left controls, to get off the vine with teeth on it.

Level 3

Electricity stage, "with red snapping teeth?", this is the tough one. When starting this... send Kong Jr. on the two poles... wait for the red teeth to loop once, then tap the joystick FAST and push the fire button. This
works until level difficulty "5" then I discovered a cool trick!

The zaps won't kill you (FROM BELOW) if you are hanging at the top most part of the poles! It will go under your feet... I don't think this works in earlier levels, so you just have to get passed the 45-46ks range and through to game 5. Then you won't have to jump right away, you can watch the zap go under your feet, just be careful for the ones above your head, those still can kill you. You might want to set difficulty game 5 just to practice the 3rd level.

Coleco must have realized that Level 3 is impossible to finish by difficulty 5, without adding this trick.

Good luck!

Current DKJ scores. I took a picture of the second score if anyone wants to see it. I won't take pictures of the other until I get to a higher level and pass someone who's really good (if it happens). This game has some of the worst play control and graphics that I've ever seen. Really horrid, but it has a certain charm to it when you learn how it works. Getting past the traps on the final level in mode 8 is pure fecking luck. They move too damn fast!

Regular: 45,100
Mode 8: 15,500

That makes a lot of sense. When I first played mode 8 a few minutes ago, I got far, but it was literally impossible to do anything on the final level because of their speed. Too bad you don't get spark (well still traps in this version) jumping points. But then again that would just lead to easy rollage.

I've beat 3rd place TG.

edited to say normal although it's pretty ****ing obvious

since it's more likely to get struck by lighting 5 times, survive 7 strokes, quintiple bypass surgery, have a 14 lb kidney stone removed than passing the 3rd stage on level 8, might as well try to get points for pushing those locks, then commit suicide.

I've noticed there seems to be a pattern in the code that you can use to your advantage for how the traps choose their movement on the first two levels. If I figure it out I'll post it.

Donkey Kong Junior (1987) (Atari).png

If you hang off the right side of any given vine, the snapjaws will pass you by from overhead. They will not go down your vine. On the key level, they will hover underneath you as long as there is only one snapjaw on that line. So, you can either wait for a second one to come down (cancelling them both out) or, hang on the left of the two vines. Then when the snapjaw is hovering, move to the right vine, drop down and continue the mission.
