Flashback 3 at E3? Is it real?

Recommended Posts

It looks like oyu can only buy from that website if you are a company?

For European customers there is this:

http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/games/atari-flashback-3/10376114.html?affil=awin&awc=1202_1307538224_cfe792b1e5477333486d35010a74158d

and this:

http://www.zavvi.com/games/atari-flashback-3/10376114.html

The item is not available yet, but I was curious and I placed an order on the second site (12.45 EUR including shipping to Italy). I wonder if it's in PAL format...

I wish I could order one before they're taken off, but who knows if they even exist. A SD card port sounds like an amazing idea to me, but what could you do with save feature? How would it even work?

Same, I'm just worried they'll take my money and run. Sounds like a great product though. I wonder why the PAL version is so much cheaper?

Just got word from Atari, seems it is not a hoax, apparently they had someone do it... kind of a shame since its just a console and not the portable unit I showed them at a demonstration meeting last year that had joystick ports on it, sd card slot and a desktop "itunes-like" download/install app...

Lets see what these other guys bring to the table, but I think my portable design would've been the better approach, then a static PnP console... I think people are tired of them and the portable was the better way to go, IMHO....

maybe if we buy a fake one - atari will see that there is demand for a real one......

That's how I see it. A rock & a hard place.

1. The vendor we want to see release a Flashback 3...hasn't. Reasons? Doesn't matter.

2. Some counterfeit vendor makes a "Flashback 3" that may or may not have features we desire(SD card), and hopefully way more games.

But we're not supposed to buy it since it's not from the almighty Atari overlords. But, but, it's what we wanted!

Looks like my off-color post I made a while back where I said maybe some Chinese knockoff vendor(who probably has churned out 200 Famiclones as I type this) will make what we want might have actually happened.

Well that sucks Curt. Sorry to hear that. As far as the portable is concerned, I would think that screen would be way to small to play games on. Did you look into having different screen sizes?

The game list is VERY odd to say the least...

Major Havoc and other arcade titles??? 7800 titles? It may be an NOAC in there, or if this is somehow through Pelican, it may be based off of their VG Pocket designs and is running a SPG260 or later and is just using games they are writing themselves, but they mention being able to play homebrew games like 2600 Halo through the SD slot, so again... all very conflicting and confusing indeed...

I guess it's another NOAC then. *sigh* - They should have went with the portable. I'll pass on this and wait for something from Legacy, at least they do things the right way ;)

I would think it's not a NOAC, maybe just a low power CPU running a software emulator of some type. I would think in quantity and re-using molds and whatever, they could get away quite cheap. After all, those handhelds with LCD screens can be had for dirt cheap and those do reasonable (if imperfect) jobs at emulating even MAME stuff. This could be the same thing, just without the cost of the LCD screen and keeping the emulation demands modest (though who knows about some of those non-Atari 2600 titles on there, if they indeed are on there).

Agreed, but again the information out there is conflicting and confusing... so until something more concrete comes out, we'll have to wait, it also talks about posting high scores to Atari, how that would happen, I dunno... sounds like a lot of miscommunications and speculations mixed in with what the real features are.

It was more than just a box, I played the device at E3. The game menu was shifted halfway offscreen, but it did have a lot of games and I played Yars Revenge on it. The main thing that seemed suspicious to me was the entire menu system was different - no more categorizing games, just a number of pages of game titles in alphabetical order.

Since E3 is still running, why don't you go back and snap some pics of the console itself and this menu in action?

Boo at the twist in this thread. Atari In Name Only approved a cheap knockoff with a couple extra things slammed into it? Such a shame since the Flashback 2 is such a good machine. Still if this is official than maybe it is wrong to judge it to soon. I guess we just have to wait and see what it is like.

BTW Curt that Atari Flashback Portable looks AWESOME! A shame it wasn't approved.
