I'm just getting in to collecting for the 2600 so I need to know what is the best price to look for when buying a game?  I know that rarity will up the price but for now I just want to find common games and I don't want to over pay.

An interesting tool to use is http://videogames.pricecharting.com/. It's not really something to use as the definitive price of a particular item, but it is good to use to see what certain items are going for. As for the best deals, I would say the Marketplace here is really amazing. Lots of great people just trying to spread retro gaming love (and earn some food money  :P ) Welcome to the hobby!

As others have said start in the marketplace and craigslist can be good source (use craigslist only after you get a feel for pricing) and the larger flea markets can sometimes hold treasures.

Like for example you may see a craigslist ad for a RARE VINTAGE KLASSIK ATARI!!!! and the pic if there is one will be a 4 switch covered in burnt moldy dirt with weeds growing out of the cart slot with several AWESOME!! carts like Pac Man,E.T.,Frogger(missing the label),Combat and Pitfall all for the low price of $200!!!!  You probably want to avoid that deal  :D

Welcome to Atari.
