mtshark7
I was wondering would a serial extension cable work for Atari 2600 joysticks? Since they have the same problem that the Playstation 3 USB cable has, lol I'm assuming they would work but not 100% sure.
GroovyBee
You would need a continuity tester to test it pin-to-pin. Serial cables can have loop-backs and crossovers depending on what its been connected to.
mtshark7
I think what I have is a straight through extension cable?

As long as it's a DB9 M-F extension you shouldn't have to worry about loopbacks. But depending on the quality of the cable, if there are any pins missing you may find some functionality missing. Not all extension cables connect all pins.
mtshark7
SlowCoder: Awesome! This is what I have... http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=919&sku=02711&st=02711 So that would work right?
keilbaca
If you're that worried about pinouts and whatnot... a Sega Genesis extension will work perfect. They require all 9 pins and its a straight through. I use them as my extensions. Edited July 18, 2011 by keilbaca

And they are crazy hard to find new for a decent price these days unfortunately.

That looks a lot like the ones I have, except mine are 10ft, and black. They work great with all my controllers. I just had to remove the screws from the female end so it would fit in my console. mtshark7
SlowCoder: I just tested those cables and they work perfectly! Yea you do have to unscrew the screws on the end then they work Thanks for the advice!
SlowCoder
The only problem using extension cables is that you actually need to be closed to your console, so the extension cables are useless. However, there is a thread detailing the building of a remote reset/select switch box.
mtshark7
True but it's good for games that continue using the fire button ...it just helps with the falling off of the stand aspect
