SlowCoder
I was working on a console this evening and decided, for the heck of it, to toss in Kaboom! to "test" it. I played for a few minutes and decided to see if I could get my wife to play it. She sat down, gave me her "why am I in here" look, and took the paddle. I hit the reset switch and she started playing. At first, she died quickly. But after a few resets, she got better ... and better. There were quite a few "last game" comments, and smiles. After a good 20 minutes of sitting on her own, she finally got up to go to the bathroom. Her last comment: "I'll be back". She hasn't played an honest game with me, or really even the kids, in years. It was really good to see her enjoy herself, if only for a few minutes. Edited July 20, 2011 by SlowCoder

Schizophretard
I had a similar experience with my wife and Kaboom!. It is so similar that I have no need to tell my story.
mtshark7
It's great to have a significant other that enjoys video games. My g/f owns a PS3 and picked up La Noire and Fear 3 last week for it. We haven't gotten around to playing them yet. Last game we played together was Batman Brave and the Bold for the Wii a month ago.
Krytol
My favorite (ex) wife story has to do with Super Mario Bros. Like all good wives, she HATED my game collection and anything to do with it. She was younger than me, and she grew up with NES. One time I was playing SMB and failing, as usual, and she grabs the controller from me and resets the game. She proceeds, silently, to go through the game, through warp levels I had never seen, and, eventually, finish the game. She throws the controller down and storms out. I had an added level of respect for her after that.

I received a text from my wife this morning: "I need the bomb game here at my office." I hope this continues.

tz101
Doesn't mean she's old, just has her own interests, ans I respect that. She is respectful of my interests as well and I am thankful for that. God's blessings! TZ
+save2600
Tell her to knit ya some videogame crap! My GF can't sew worth a shit, but at least she tries. Gave her an old Pac-Man sleeping blanket and sheet set and voila! Curtains, drapes and pillows for the game rooms! BTW: I hope you know I was totally just funnin' TZ!

Gave her an old Pac-Man sleeping blanket and sheet set and voila! Curtains, drapes and pillows for the game rooms! That's really cool stuff! My wife is still in the planning phases but when she gets enough spare time (she's thinking Christmas gift) she is going to completely custom-make a King-size quilt of the first stage of Pac-Man for me. She is a very excellent seamstress (she is a ballet choreographer and designs costumes!) and has been tinkering with the screenshot I gave her for a month or so. She also just started working at Jo-Ann Fabrics (though she has worked there on-and-off as management for 4 years or so) so she has a lot of knowledge-base material to work with....I'm really hoping it comes true! She's very meticulous to detail and has told me it will be picture-perfect screenshot material.
nvrmndtheruins
Congrats man! I know It made me happy the time my girlfriend randomly said "So when do I get to play?" She wont play a lot but from time to time she sit down and play some games and she at least kind of understand the appeal now
Amstari
thats cool, the nearest i've got so far is with my niece playing some of the sesame street games, and she pretty muched loved them. my little man is now 13 months old and i plan on bringing him up on a strict 2600 diet :-) It's good to see kids growing up on a 2600 diet! It's 100% natural and sugar free My youngest daughter can play "Alpha Beam with Ernie" by herself now. She loves Pac Man, she is too young to play it properly yet, she also loves the Pac Man cartoons. I think she is going to grow up to be a gamer. My oldest daughter likes games but spends more time creating characters in games (like the Sims), but doesn't play the actual games much. She has also tried making some levels in games like SuperTux and Open Sonic recently. My partner does like to play Frogger but she isn't interested in many other 2600 games. I will ask her to try Kaboom, she will either love it and get addicted or hate it and get frustrated. She is more interested in playing Guitar Hero and Rockband.

But he likes creating characters and customizing cars almost as much as playing the games themselves. My younger son (who can play Star Wars: The Force Unleashed at 4 years old) just likes to jump in and play ... "screw the costumes! Let me kill people!" DickNixonArisen
For whatever reason there are some games that just appeal to women who otherwise are not into games, probably because their appeal is massive enough that it cannot be denied. Other factors that seem to help are cuteness, positive female characters, and a real depth of character interaction/story. It's hard to have any of those on the atari; I've noticed girls like indy 500 though. Maybe it's the paddle controller? When I was a kid, the only 2600 game my mom would play was Freeway. Zero learning curve seems to be a bonus. Once you get to the NES or SMS the graphics are capable of expressing cute; the mario titles (2 and 3 esp) and kirby's adventure will fly for most women. Little nemo is cute but probably too hard - not that women aren't capable of performing as well at games, but many just don't seem as interested in the practice that it takes to do so. Tetris, everyone loves. Dr. mario has some similar appeal of course. The mario kart probably isn't girlfriend ready at this stage in development. On the SNES/Genesis, you have a lot more options... and games like FF3/6, earthbound, and chrono trigger. The characters have enough appeal that a lot of women are willing to put the time into longer and harder titles. The usual first-party Nintendo stuff has plenty of crossover appeal, cute enough to be cute without stretching it too much (zelda, mario, kirby), and there are some more positive female protagonists (samus, alis, RPG characters), which really do help. From here on out there are a lot more RPG's that girls like, the modern FF's, kingdom hearts, a bunch of random ones... and plenty of 3-d action titles that fly, rabbids, some pretty good stuff. DDR is a good game to play with a spouse or female friend, any kind of party game... and definitely the more modern mario karts, although the rubberbanding and merciless combo-smashing of the Wii version might turn an easily frustrated person off... Wii fit seems moderately popular; I don't know much about the kinect but I bet it's doing well with women - at least as far as it's doing well at all. It's SELLING well, anyway.
