It's really done "because we can" and it's a cool underused feature :) It's CPU intensive so it limits it practical use. I'm using GTIA for the sound fx in MM with the four Pokey channels being used in the music.

That doesn't sound too limiting, if you can use it during a graphic game while using all four Pokey channels. That's one thing that I envy about the 7800, being able to use TIA and Pokey simultaneously, although it's rarely been done ("Commando" only?). Many 8-bit games have left sound effects out because they wanted to use all four Pokey channels for music...

Just stumbled on this and sorry to resurrect an old thread - what are the specs of the GTIA sound - is it similar to the older machines internal speaker?

I've seen some GTIA "music" and if I'm not mistaken, it can generate tones beyond simple clicks / buzzes...is that correct? (Can't see / access the music in the original post).

This is great, but I only wish that all the Antonia users, Rapidus users and everyone else with a C02, 802 or 816 could run these. They could if it were written properly without using illegal opcodes.

at his own request got heart transplanted and now complains that he can not skydiving?

You need to face the fact that our numbers are growing. I am certain that the makers and users of Antonia, Rapidus, XL14, etc. will agree that software should be written to be as compatible as possible, and not written to intentionally not run on newer CPUs.

Do you think that since "our numbers are growing," I should stop writing using the capabilities of the standard Atari and begin creating progs for modified computers?

I prefer to write for my satisfaction... not for yours ;-)

fair point but also fair point not to do... depends on which side of the medal you are...

same logic could apply to write software which runs with SpartaDos X...

or to write for 600 XL or to write for 130XE or to write for 1MB machines or to write for VBXE etc...
