Oh, .... I'm talking about Label Variants here ;)

Including French Canadian ...... EXCLUDING CBS

Dang-It... I already voted! Oh well. How come CBS' release doesn't count?

I'm just not sure how many CBS DK variants exist ...... :?

Maybe friends of Europe could confirm how many CBS DK variants exist?

You'll have to minus 2 from my answer. :dunce:

So I guess, you mean 3 differents variants ... right?

Spoiler alert, possibly...

I had at least 20 DK cartridges that I sold to classics a year ago or so. I located the variations, but I should have taken pictures... .

So how many variants have you spoted?

I can't remember, although I think there were about five. Some of the variations were probably fairly subtle, with minor changes in font size, etc.

Maybe you could post pictures of your variations, and the rest of us can see if we have any others.

Great idea for ColecoVision trivia! Love seeing the conversation and talk about and MANY variations, no matter how subtle.

Although, I'd suggest for future trivia style questions, I'd rather see things that have definitive answers. Like:

"What was the toll-free number on the white sticker on the top of most US Colecovisions?"

"What part number was the Colecovision in Coleco's cataloging system?"

"What New York town was used in the printed address on instruction sheets and promotional material for Coleco Industries in the 80's?"

"What was that town's zip code?"

"If you bought an Adam in 1984, you may have been eligible for a scholarship worth how much from Coleco Industries?"

"What company produced a passthru keypad to enable most Atari compatible joysticks to work better with the ColecoVision?"

"How many retail programming language packages were produced by Coleco for the Adam?"

Other questions that might have debatable answers upon further investigation might be:

"What was the first released Colecovision game to be licensed from outside the world of video gaming? (IE not an arcade conversion license)"

"How many Colecovision games contain digitized or scanned graphics?" (Only one jumps out, but there may be more)

"How many Colecovision games were based on existing movies or movie characters?"

I'm sure there's lots more to come. These were just off the top of my head as I was writing my weekly trivia today anyway. :) (I've hosted trivia nights here in St. Louis for the past 6 years in case you were curious!)

That's why I decided to make a CV FUN QUIZ, the goal is let people learn more about the Colecovision collecting universe.... ok, I admit, I became alot crazy with all those variants but all in all they are fun to collect

The plan is include ALL the variants at colecoindustries.com

Here's a picture of my own DK variants

From upper left:

- Made in Taiwan (The very first DK cart) THE RAREST!

- Made in USA (The $1 cart everyone have)

- For CV & ADAM (The Re-Print cart)

From bottom Left: (French Canadian variants)

- Canadian Release (the 2nd print)

- Canadian Release (the 1st print) (Rounded Label Corner) PINK COLOR LOGO

Also, If you think this was usefull, do not hesitate to give a +1 ;)

Does the Taiwan cart have a Taiwan Cooper Black box or is a normal type of box?

Does the Taiwan cart have a Taiwan Cooper Black box or is a normal type of box?

No... it came packaged with the ColecoVision system or possibly ended up in the Coleco style or CBS style boxes.

The cart has "Made in Taiwan" stamped into the plastic under the Coleco logo on the back as well as in the text of the label.

Chronology of labels:

DK "Made and Printed in Taiwan" label = 3rd qtr. 1982

DK "Printed in U.S.A." label = 4th qtr. 1982-3rd qtr. 1983

DK with ColecoVision/Adam label = 4th qtr. 1983-2nd qtr. 1984

Besides the labels, the instruction books for the ColecoVision version of DK also were revised throughout the production run:

DK #78214 = 3rd qtr. 1982 ("Plays, sounds and scores like the DONKEY KONG™ arcade game!")

DK #78214A = 4th qtr. 1982 (same bottom heading)

DK #78214B = 1st qtr. 1983-2nd qtr. 1984 ("Plays like the DONKEY KONG™ arcade game!")

While the label on the Intellivision version of DK has the additional mention of "Authorized Exclusive Licensee - Coleco Industries, Inc." after the "DONKEY KONG is the trademark of Nintendo of America, Inc. © 1981 Nintendo of America, Inc." for some reason, neither the ColecoVision nor the Atari 2600 versions actually have such a mention on the front label, although it is mentioned on the back cover of the DK instruction book and in Coleco promotional materials covering DK.

In addition, the CV console instruction book does show an illustration of the CV DK cartridge label showing the "Authorized Exclusive Licensee" text on it.

5-17-2015: I do need to add more details regarding these label variations:

1. All of the Taiwanese-made carts will have the TM (trademark) symbol at the bottom right of the ColecoVision logo. U.S.-made copies place it at the top right of the logo.

2. All Taiwanese-made carts also have the Nintendo byline below the DK logo on the spine (besides the main label view). No U.S.-made copies have this on the spine as far as I know.

3. Some U.S.-made DK carts might have the TM symbol next to the CV logo on the spine (in this case, at top right) - most do not.

4. On the late 1983 "For ColecoVision & Adam" label version, the TM symbol on both the CV logo and the Nintendo byline is replaced by a registered trademark ("®") symbol.
