Jaguar HSC Revamped, SEASON 3, ROUND 4: Raiden

Round Over.

RULES AND DIRECTIONS:

This round we are playing Raiden. Pick any mode (2, 5 or 8 credits mode), but unlike last season, we will only be using *one* credit. This means that after you get a game over, you must drop the controller and let the countdown get to zero. DO NOT CONTINUE. Submit your score when you are finished. To clarify further, you use one credit when starting a game. So basically, start a game, and when you lose your lives, do not continue.

I really, really want to stress that you be aware when you die, because it is very easy to accidentally continue in this game (sometimes the continue screen won't even appear if you are mashing buttons quick enough).

If you are not familiar with the Jaguar HSC general rules and how the scoring system works, please visit this thread here: http://www.atariage....son-3-schedule/. It is recommended that you take a photo of your score, but it is not required. We go on good faith here, so please be honest.. :)

ahhh! a game I can really get into! though my biggest gripe is the lack of rapid fire!

1 credit... the only way I know how to play :)

I do have one question... is it ok if I use the player 2 side (blue ship)? I prefer to use the player 2 side when playing Raiden... (it goes back to the days of my playing Raiden DX) if it is not allowed, I am fine playing with the player 1 side (red ship) per the rules.

Made one attempt this morning to get the thread rolling, but twoquick beat me to it. Faster to post and a higher score. :lolblue:

My first try: 180,350

One of the Jaguar games that'd really benefit from a decent arcade stick and better buttons. I've got the parts around to build my own but never bothered. If I can find some time in the next two weeks... maybe...

Are you sacrificing a jad pad to make it? I've been looking to making my own controller but I don't want to destroy a normal or pro controller.

I wasn't going to sacrifice a Jaguar controller. The Jaguar controller's PCB is too big and bulky to deal with. I bought a small breadboard and all the ICs/resistors to duplicate the controller's circuit board. (the parts are really cheap) Initially, I just wanted to make a small project box adapter to connect a Neo Geo stick to the Jaguar. I also wanted to map the keypad to a second controller port for dual stick Total Carnage. BUT the Jaguar controller uses multiple grounds for encoding the button/keypad inputs and there's no easy way to carry multiple grounds across a standard controller port. Much easier to make a dedicated controller than an adapter.

I've got a lot of spare arcade parts and a couple empty arcade stick shells, so it wouldn't take too long to put a stick together. My interests have switched over to JAMMA PCBs for most of my gaming projects now though. Also, the drama of the Jaguar community over the last couple years has dissolved most of my interest in the system anyway...

I bet it would be a fun project. However I don't think it would fix the laggy feel you get when moving the ship, and having normal arcade buttons might feel misleading because you don't get the same results as the arcade version when you mash as quickly as you can :(

Both ships are on the same 'side' in this version. :?

If you really prefer the bottom right quadrant over the top right, go ahead. It's more trouble on your part though!

You get about 800,000-1,000,000 points by playing until the final boss if you do it right, then you get an extra million point bonus for finishing the game. So, Roughly two million points per loop. It's not too bad. I actually expect to have at least four million when it's all said and done (I forced myself to stop after I finished the game once on this playthrough). :D

If you are having trouble, be sure to read the tips I wrote in the first post on the Raiden round from 2010: http://www.atariage....ost__p__2083257

You can do it. It's not tough. Here's a quick rundown on how you can go about doing it:

1. Focus on the red power-ups for the main weapon, and homing missiles as your secondary; With a fully powered red shot, there's a lot less leg work to do since you can cover the entire screen. The homing missiles will hit anything you miss.

2. Hug one side of the wall at all times if you aren't comfortable. I recommend the left side on stages 2 and 4, and the right side on stages 3, 5, and 6. Sit at the very bottom of the screen on stage 7 (enemies come from all angles except the bottom).

3. Use bombs to ease the trouble on pain-in-the-ass bosses. I usually bomb the stage 4 boss at least once, and I bomb once or twice on the stage 6 boss (I especially hate that one because rocks come flying from all angles making it tough to not die).

4. Enemies outside the screen will not shoot, bosses included. On the first boss, I stay near the left side of the screen so the second tank won't shoot. Use this to your advantage on most of the bosses in the game.

Gonna give this a go tonight after work I think. Also gonna go back and try and set a score for missile command even if I can't post it since I totally failed and forgot to play it when that round was going. :(

You will still receive participation points for doing so. Whatever the lowest-scoring player got, you will get too in participation points. :)

Did a pretty good 1 life 4 stages run.

399,520

A tip on that boss: Go for the sides first, then drop a bomb when he lets out those two circle pieces that shoot in all directions (obviously keep firing at them when the bomb is on them). After that, the boss is pretty tame.

Began with 5 continues and played until my first continue:

518,900

This game would be perfect if it didn't feel cramped by the giant stat bar on the right side of the screen. If I recall correctly no other copy of Raiden on other systems had that, so why did they decide to add it for the Jag version?

It's to keep a similar aspect ratio of the playfield to the arcade game. The Sega Genesis version of it does it as well, and the PlayStation version does it by default with an option to stretch the picture. The SNES, PC and Turbo Grafx versions are full-screen, which isn't true to the arcade game. Use that bar to your advantage, BTW.

Gave it another run this morning. I did what Austin said not to do and was pushing buttons so fast that I missed the continue. I was over 600,000 after the last boss and died very quickly on the next stage but I did kill a half dozen or so enemies when I saw my bombs had refilled and I realized what I had done. The photo shows 619,840 but I'll just go with 600,000 (I was over that at the last boss). Or Austin doesn't have to accept it since it was my bad.
