The Jaguar rarity list hasn't been updated in a while. There's a lot of homebrew stuff missing from it that should be there. From what I can gather, it's not really focused on cancelled games either with the exception of a couple.

 

I wonder if the Dyno Park Tycoon was ever released.

 

Yes, for the 3DO, it was.

played Tetrisphere via emulator the other day... such an incredibly awesome game. simple at the surface and deeper the more you play it. So sad that Nintendo snatched this away from the Jag. I remember reading the promising previews of it before Nintendo put down the cash.

 

I'm surprised that Nintendo hasn't rereleased this game as either a new release for the Wii or via their emulator offerings.

 

I hope that one day someone makes a facsimile of this and releases it on some other platform, be it Xbox Live Indie Games, XBLA, PSN, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, etc. Would suck that this game die in obscurity.

Unfortunatly atari probably wasnt going to offer them much for it and nintendo waved the cash in front of them. Given how atari treated developers back then for the jag id say it probably wasnt a bad move on the phear developers part...

 

I'd agree with Rush. Its too bad they went with Nintendo but Atari most likely didnt see what Nintendo saw at that convention. Which was apparently a great game and a great development team. If they did they would of taken steps to make sure the Phear team was locked down to finish the game on the Jaguar. But they weren't known for making the smartest decisions.

Lots of games were finished completely and lost, Ishar 3, Highlander 2 , Highlander 3, Kid Grid , Country Grid, Tinhead, Creature Shock, and many others.. The demo was shown of Phear so i'm sure it was atleast somewhat completed. Nintendo would have seen what they were paying for. Truth is the ROM is most likely buried for legal reasons.

Were all of those games actually completed? I've seen the game design document for a Highlander sequel but nothing more concrete than that. It'd be interesting to have a list of games that are actually known to have been completed but remain unreleased/unseen in the wild.

Doesn't look like we're missing much then. :lol:

 

Who knows... maybe it was vastly improved? Be awesome to see some of those supposed finished titles released someday.

Probably, but look at Cybermorph<>Battlemorph. In the case of Highlander, like to think a sequel to such a horribly executed game would try to redeem itself. You know, people learning from their mistakes... that whole chestnut. :lol:

True, but Battlemorph came out a couple of years after Cybermorph. My guess is if Highlander 2 was complete (and they were even working on a third), it was probably a rush job if it was finished only a year after the original came out. :( That's just speculation, of course.

I don't think in any way shape or form was BattleMorph vastly improved over Cybermorph. What was that 3do space shooter game we were all discussing a few threads back? Now that's what Battlemorph should of been over Cybermorph. Not the half ass poke at a sequel we ended up getting.

To each their own of course, but I felt Battlemorph had some nice upgrades that made it far more interesting to play. Eerie music, the ability to go under water (and the music flipping on the fly), the tunnels, the varied missions (instead of collecting the same capsules each and every mission), the bit of texture mapping added, the bosses, etc., etc. I actually feel comfortable in saying that Battlemorph is a GOOD game. Cybermorph, not so much. It's fun once in a while, but it's lacking in so many areas.

Yeah I agree it had some nice upgrades but it just wasn't enough overall IMO. There were parts that were completely lazy. How about the force fields? How about the electrical power lines from the batteries to the force fields or whatnot? They were just little floating squares going by. They could of done better than that for a graphic effect. They didnt even try. And the developers fascination with our ship shooting 'ping pong balls'. And the flying homing missile hammer, what the hell was that? A homing hammer that flies around and bonks the enemy on the head? Interesting as a lark but goofy and out of touch for the developers to put ih as a serious feature IMO. The fish were the same size as the submarines.

 

I dunno maybe I'm too picky I just thought the upgrades were the bare minimum they could get by with to call it a sequel.

:-( sorry to dig this from the grave, but...we since know Creature shock was never even started, let alone finished, but i looking at old issue of Edge, saw the Tetrisphere N64 review (6/10) and was left wondering had this come out on Jaguar as orginally intended, if it'd done anything at all to improve Jaguars reputation, let alone sales?.

 

Edge (un-named) reviewer said: 'The puzzle game is but 1 genre that the N64 still lacks a sterling example of-Tetrisphere is unlikely to reset the balance, despite some nice touches'

 

 

And i kinda could of seen (in an alternative history type viewpoint) Edge saying exactly the same had this been a Jaguar review.

 

For those who know the game well, what impact do you feel it would have made, had it arrived on Jaguar?

My opinion is that Tetrisphere on the N64 was inconsequential as a game and did nothing for the system. Would have been different had it been released for the Jag though as you would have seen more sales relative to systems owned. In other words and knowing how the Jags library turned out - what is a mediocre game on the N64, would have been better received on the Jaguar.

 

While most of us following the Jag back then were looking forward to Tetrisphere, in the end, just turned out to be another quirky and forgettable puzzle game. That said, had it been released for the Jag, the game would be heralded as the greatest thing since Flip Out! :ponder: :lol:

@save2600:Yep, your pretty much saying how i personally feel things would of turned out had the game turned up on Jaguar, not N64.UK press like Ultimate Future Games, Gamesmaster, Edge would, i'm sure of made fun of the fact that finally Jaguar had a decent puzzle game...usual...'Oh look folks, finally Jaguar owners get another game worth buying, it's only been X months since....' that type of stance and it'd been a nice fit in magazines Top 10 Jaguar games lists that cropped up from time to time.

 

To existing Jaguar owners, sure it'd been a shot in the arm, but it would of taken far more than this to reverse the machines fortunes.

 

So, personally i'm chalking it up with a good few other Lost Jaguar games, that were'nt technically that great a loss, per say, more a shame they never appeared.

Pretty sad about what happened to phear, and a bit surprising it hasn't turned up yet. Besides having it at the CES 1995, and in the lobby at Atari HQ, it has been said it was also pretty popular in the offices at Atari. There must've been a few flash carts with the game on it floating around the company back in the day... hate to think several people took copies home that were later discarded after they began collecting dust.

 

I doubt it would have been a gamechanger because Atari's bad decisions had already snowballed to a point of no return by the end of '95. But it would've been a solid title and could've left people with a more favorable impression of the system. Tetrisphere came out of the N64 in '97 and was pretty well reviewed, I think had it come out on the Jaguar in '96 it would've gotten some good press too. Despire the fact the N64 version looked considerably more polished, the solid year lead on the Jaguar would've made up for that.

 

Pretty sad that Atari knew that had something but let it go... I guess they probably relized by CES '95 the Jaguar was so far gone there was no real reason to try and pick up exclusive rights to the game so it made it easy for nintendo to come in and take it away from them.
