Secret codes in Alternate Reality - The City

Hi everyone,

 

This for the Alternate Reality fans (guess many of us!). Just found this surfing the web:

 

"SECRET CODES IN THE CITY

Philip Price is a man who is known to not be fond of cheating in computer games, atleast,

not without a negative effect for every positive one. So, there are some codes in The City

which can be entered, but exactly what they do is unknown (even to Philip Price himself at

this day).

 

Well, by entering your Character's name as "fiat" with the CTRL key pressed down you get

the question "What is Reality?"

 

The following are the various answers and their cryptic effects:

 

cela saute aux yeux - To be outside of time is to be unchangable.

sempiternal - The gift of life is thru love.

Master of Chronos - Hail Master of Chronos! But power is fleeting.

unseen - That which is invisible is real"

 

Does anybody know the effect (if there is one) of such codes in the game? I´ve tried them all but can´t notice any result.

Chances are he might have had cheats behind them during development but removed the cheats and left the activator as is.

 

In the game "invisible" tends to mean that you're less likely to have an encounter where you're the "surprised" party.

Isn't it, "Hail all Master of Chronos." I've tried experimenting with these and writing down the results. For example, using the Master of Chronos one I tried hailing every encounter initially before anything else, even if they were evil. I recorded the results and any differences I noticed from normal characters, but it was decades ago, so I don't recall what I found out. I do recall finding differences, so I don't think the codes are only remnants from debugging, but still functional. I think unseen may reduce noticeablity.

(Years ago), I remember reading about entering that in at the name entry, but I don't recall anyone ever figuring out what they did. Perhaps as someone else suggested, the associated cheat code was removed from the program. Now the Dungeon on the other hand has so many ways to cheat both by entering a cheat code and exploiting the many bugs in the code.

Here's a link to an online FAQ that list's most of the cheats. It may be missing a couple. It mentions bringing one of a kind items to the smitty, but I think it misses telling you to bring special armor (like golden greaves) to the Enchantress. If you are wearing stat altering armor and have her enchant them, the armor is removed from you wearing them and put in your inventory, but the stat they altered remains. You can then just drop that piece of armor and the stat change is permanent. I think it may also fail to mention that if you import a new character from the city and head straight to the chapel, the character will be treated as if he/she is morally perfect and offered a very powerful weapon & spell and safe/free place to eat-sleep. I also figured out one other cheat sort of related to the Enchantress trick mentioned above. I don't think I've seen anyone else mention this one. Every time you find panther gloves(which give your bare hands a boost in damage), wear them and then do enchant/drop item trick mentioned above. By doing this with several pairs of panther gloves, you make your bare hands by far the most powerful weapon in the dungeon. The only catch is bare hands don't work at all against some non-magic weapon resistant monsters, so you do need a backup weapon in hand or a spell like flame blade or frost blade to give your bare hands a little extra kick.
