CHIPPER - Ideas and questions

Hi sage,

Hello Musicians

I start this thread cause i play this days with chipper.

Maybe some users have ideas or solutions to make it a little easier creating nice sounds.

First question.

How can i add a pattern break?

Is it possible or possible to integrate in the next version?

Regards

Matthias

Hi matthias,

I've been struggling with chiptunes for a while now, but finally got some nice workflow going on. Ideally, I use another tool than chipper to create the tune.. I've looked at protracker, fasttracker and openMPT and I must say that openMPT looks easiest to use for me. Creating the tune there, exporting it to MOD and importing it in chipper is what I've been doing so far.

Chipper is a nice tool, but it really needs to take the step fully to a tracker environment, or this tool risks becoming an "use once" tool. It's insanely complicated to write music with, it's utterly irritating with all them windows covering the entire screen, it is a total mess to get the brains around it at best.

There's no wonder why Nes / Gameboy has more musicians composing music for these systems, because they already have proper tracker programs. Take a look at FamiTracker for instance. It's a plain Jane tracker built from scratch to mimic the FastTracker / ProTracker series. With a lot of dudes composing music with Renoise and such trackers the step isn't very long to take to get composing with FamiTracker. All that needs to be done is to understand the instrument generator. The rest is easy as ABC.

If Lynx is to have the same luck as NES has music wise then Lynx needs a proper tracker. Atari 800 has Raster Music Tracker. Atari ST has a bunch of other trackers. Heck even the Sega Genesis has their own tracker. So why can't Lynx have one? I don't care that people hate trackers, but as it is currently this tool holds the lowest priority spot among the music programs I have on my computer, just because it's so insanely complicated.

Thanks for having a look at it.

Remark 0:

You can close all but three windows. The main mixer, the "instrument" panel and the "Tracker".

Most of the other stuff is meant for sound effects (like timeline for example).

Remark 1:

Well It was not started as a tracker, nor is the underlying driver a "tracker" driver.

Remark 2:

It was meant as a tool to emulate the hardware better than handy and check out sound directly without to bother running it in the emulator.

This its more a converter (from mod or others) which takes the notes and replaces the instruents than a full tracker.

Remark 3:

Without useful resonance ther is no reason to improve it.

"Have a look at other trackers" is not too useful, as I know that already.

Uhoh, this argumnet is soo wrong. There is a tracker because there are people who wanted one and invested their time.

And sure, you can take fami or rmt or maxymizer and "just" change the instrument part. but _who_ will do that :-)

If you want some improvements, specify them, then I see if I have time to add them.

If you have a lot of time, you can have the source code and do the changes yourself.

If you (or I) have a lot of time, the best choice would be to completly rewrite it from scratch and remove all the dead ends in teh software.

Update.

Mainly: Changes in the (PC) replayer code

Support for BRK comand

Note: Usage of BRK needs new replayer code on the lynx. Thus if you want to use it, oyu have to wait until I have updated all example sources :-7

Great work sage,

i missed the break command already.

Questions:

- Is it possible to do all Windows as Tabs? In Delphi its copy&paste but i have no idea how much work is in your IDE. If its possible it would be less confusing to work with it and jump from window to window.

-When i start a song and switch to the instrument window, starting or changing a instrument, chipper will crash. Is it possible to add that the playing song will be stopped if i change to instrument window?

- Is it possible to activate the "start from position" button?

-How can i loop the complete song in newcc65 driver soundbs

no, they are implemented as different code modules.

As I use monitors with >= 1680 pixels width this is not of any issue for me ;-)

latest version?

- Is it possible to activate the "start from position" button?

again, check latest version please.

anyway, position is related only to position in song list, not within the current track.

-How can i loop the complete song in newcc65 driver soundbs

Check if it has ended and restart.

Apart from that there is not yet a loop option.

just have to quote myself:

This also means it will not work with the public version of the slideshow generator. which means, if you need it for a slideshow, you have to cantact me.

The updated example sources for cc65 and newcc65 can be found at the usual place.

Haha sorry, I'm a visual clicker, but yeah I almost got the hang of it now, I think the cells are instrument, note and part.

However, in all cases this is awesome, it's a big step forward for lynx music composing! It's going to be so much easier now to make songs than before.

Does a manual count as an idea? ^^ I managed to make a little song and I'm really impressed with chipper so far just by working out some stuff by myself and by reading about trackers in general, but there's a lot of stuff i feel I'm not able to understand properly without any chipper specific instructions. I was going to show the song here but I like it so much that I want to save it for a future lynx demo or game.

One thing that would be really awesome to understand too is how to properly create and use those "fake-fast-arpeggio-chords"-simple instruments in the correct tempo, I'd say those are really under-used in lynx music.

Hmm, I thought the tempo/main timer ticks were out of sync with the wave envelope on some of the instruments I found in some older chipper download, but I did som more testing now and it seemed to be working nicely, so I've must have done something wrong last time. I also found a small manual/introduction translated to english on the chipmusic forum mentioned in another thread so now I understand the simple instrument window a bit better (yay!)

One question, I noticed you can copy a track/pattern/page in the playlist. But is it possible to copy all notes from a track and put them in a new page/track? Quite often it is handy to re-use song parts and just tweak them a little. When I copied one track in the playlist and made changes it would change all copies of that track. Maybe there's just some simple thing I've missed or don't know about trackers.

Answering my own question here if it would happen to be of help to someone having the same issue.

I noticed a couple of days ago that you can copy one track (one fourth of a song-part) just by writing in the number on a new row in the playlist, in any of the four spaces, so that's the same thing as copying all of the notes in only one of the tracks. After learning that I must say it's really fast, easy and fun creating songs in chipper (I still have to learn how to create sounds/instruments that are in pitch though).
