I have a Joust lab loaner marked 208.  After dumping it and checking against the 5200 ROM set that I have, it's a match for a file marked as a 1984 release.  Has anybody compared the 1983 and 1984 versions?  Mainly I'm just curious as to what the changes are and I can't seem to find any details about this release.

Huh? Where did you get the two different versions? AFAIK there was only one Joust version, from 1983. Sometimes ROM dumps have incorrect names.

I couldn't tell you what set I have, but plenty of ROM sites have both.  These 208 EPROMs are a 100% match for the Joust listed as "1984".

OK., so show me those two ROMs or a place where they can be downloaded from. Without them I can't really help you find the differences.

'1984' is the original 16k
'1983' is the same '1984' 16k doubled up (padded) into 32k

I think the c64 proto version of this joust is still missing. It was shown at CES.

Wow, it looks really close to the Atari 8-bit version.  Really really close.

EDIT: Ah, that's probably because someone took the 8-bit version and did an authorized C-64 port.  I think the site is owned by the former GCC programmer who did the 8-bit version.

Yeah, I was wondering who might have done it. No one has ever turned up any code for a C64 Joust.

Huh, sorry to hear this didn't bring up anything  new.  A big fan of the Atari 8 Joust.

I'm willing to bet that's also an unreleased C64 Stargate on the right next to the alternate Joust. Those graphics don't fit with the released Defender for the C64, and the ship graphic fits with its representation in Stargate.

So did anyone ask Steve (the keeper of that page) about the unreleased C-64 stuff? Maybe he has it around somewhere... About Joust, he mentions subtile details that DON'T match the original game, which means the game must be pretty much arcade perfect. I'd love to play this on the C-64...

No, wait, I just re-read what he says on his page... seems like the C-64 version was actually a hack (as we would now call it) of the Atari 8-bit version done by a different programmer. But comparing both versions side-by-side, it seems like the unreleased C-64 one has got more colorful sprites, probably because the C-64 provides 8 multicolor sprites while the Atari 8-bit only provides 4 monochrome players. So I don't know who might have a copy of the unreleased C-64 version. It certainly didn't leak back then, while other games (Track & Field, Mario Bros.) did.
