Atari's Plato Cartridge question

DarkLord

Recommended Posts

Here's first cut of an alt character set.

Only standard characters have been altered here so far.

I'll be looking into the special characters next. I wonder if there's

a way I can get output of all standard Plato terminal characters

used in the real thing? That way I can make a full comparison.

[Edit: baud rate display fixed to reflect actual speed of 2400]

Learning Phone (2400 baud, alt character set).rom

They talk about using a few of the special characters in the Learning Phone

manual, but there are other characters I'm not sure how to produce --

including some standard characters (although some are only standard on a

PC keyboard) including:

- curly braces (left can be produced with tilde)

- vertical bar

- ampersand

- caret

- tilde

- backslash

- at

BTW, all aspects for the video mode can be changed, including zoomed mode.

So it's possible to match both views (info on page 29 of the manual):

Normal

Well, I discovered PLATO Golf is difficult to play . The Learning Phone's display is not square and in Golf I'm supposed to guestimate an angle at which to hit the ball. I know the viewport is squeezed down from original image's square image to a roughly 4:3 but I can't seem to make myself make a correction in the game.

Zoom does not work for this game.

You need the PLATO keyboard page:

Go to lesson 'info'.

Press DATA

enter the word keyboard when it asks for a feature.

You can also use the lesson 'diag' which has a host of features such as showing keys, etc. You will find the standard character set, of interest.

you guys might also want to check out game 'spasim'

I will, thanks.

also, mrfish, how did you change the colors for the text and background luminance?

Page 29 of the manual. the <Select> key can be set to change each aspect.

Also btw, awesome font changes! :)

Thanks. Hard constraints to work with, 6 x 4...

Ok if you didn't, we'll just need to change the value in the ROM, one of us will find it. Look for writes to the color registers.

I know how to do it, I just don't have time today.

[Edit: Never mind, I thought you were talking to me, but you were talking to a8isa1.]

Just making a public note of the idea.

Here's how to change all the colors:

The <SELECT> key is in color-changing mode by default.

To change the mode of what <SELECT> will alter, use the follow key combos first:

<OPTION> + B = luminance for background

<OPTION> + T = luminance for text

<OPTION> + C = color

Probably some other things that should be done with the ROM:

- set local echo to "off" by default

- set full and zoomed views to the same color scheme (and preferably something other than that sick green)

I would never even consider altering an original cartridge. Didn't think there might have been production carts until Gozar posted an image. All the images I had seen in the past had white paper labels. Perhaps one had a hand written label. However, for usage in Altirra and "working copies" of carts I'd probably dump the fallback message of "Microbit 300 baud" for "no serial interface" or something to that effect.

That's what I was talking about (the ROM image), although I guess people will do whatever they want with them.

My zoom defaults to the standard Atari blue, but I get this in condensed mode by default.

I'm using Altirra and the "Authentic NTSC" palette. I can't test on real hardware until there's

a binary available. Has anyone tried to convert the cart to a binary file yet?

perhaps the color change should be a preset that one can select rather than a default. while you can do it by hand... since it is a rom..

oh my that's horrid, this kind of thing happens because of out of adjustment and incorrect ntsc standard replication through the ages....

Most coders have no idea what golden rod is, that's a color you have to get right to adjust the Atari properly. And then you get into the tint adjust of the crt etc etc etc... Try a different palette .....

Okay, my Altirra looks as horrid as yours... blech...

Is there a way to change what group you belong to on Plato?

I signed up back in 2014 and I'm in the group "pioneer", but I'd like to change to the new atari group.

Leave a note in psonotes asking. If nobody replies within 24 hours, send a note to request. (I know psonotes is where this is supposed to go, but don't know if cyber1 checks that notefile)
