Recommended Posts

our game this round is Moon Patrol. Play on default "Beginner" setting and if using emulation, keep the controls using 2 buttons for jump and fire so as not to change the game play. Using separate fire buttons for up instead of directional is unique to this port. :)

Round ends Sunday, April 29th 2012 @ 10pm EST

Current HSC record: Moon Patrol - bohoki 83,000

Beat this for a bonus point!

Challenge: Play another port of Moon Patrol and we'll see how much difference the controls make. Top 3 scores get a bonus point!

I figure I'll share one of my 'secret' scoring tricks!

it is better to JUMP over the rocks rather than shoot them... you earn more points! I believe it's 100 points for shooting them, and 200 for jumping over them...

Moon Patrol is one of my most favorite games on the Atari 5200! the graphics are amazing, the music is excellent... I love the gameplay! I'm looking forward to put in some more time and improve my score :)

Hi - I don't own an Atari 5200 - but an Atari 600 XL with Moon Patrol! Is it possible to take part in this competition?

Yes. You can play for our Bonus Challenge (see 1st post above) where all other ports are being played for comparison. :)

The XL-version is the same game as the 5200-port of MP -only different controllers.

...and control setup is different as well. The 5200 uses the 2nd fire button as jump, whereas the other ports use "up". I do allow A8 ports when the controls don't offer an advantage or take away from the uniqueness of the game. Otherwise, I'd be using it as well. ;)

So no emulators? :)

Emulation is fine as long as "jump" isn't mapped to a directional on a controller. Even my DC emulator has it on 2nd fire button.

In the meantime, I've improved my game some. :)

Last night's first runs:

5200: 14,000

TI99: 12,650

If enough players join the challenge, I'll revise the scoring to a 3-2-1 bonus.

Didnt knew that TI99 had one..I had an TI99 way back in the days. I have to see if i can get my 5200 Moon Patrol cart to work. It boots up but when you press start it freezes and the pixs are all over the screen. May have to clean the cart?

I gave all my available ports a play last night. :) Many moons patrolled.

A8- 24,000 identical to 5200, just with standard controls to the other ports

VIC-20- 14,570 good one, though graphically lower

TI99- 12,650 IMO best looking, but jumps are real floaty making the mine levels extremely difficult

C64- 9,000 graphically good, but playability suffers. almost as bad as 2600

2600- 5,280 they could've done much better on this one. Worst port I've played. :(

If you have Popeye put that in your system for a minute or so, turn off power, pop in Moon Patrol, it should work fine then. :)
