LynxVGL
Awhile back this thread... http://www.atariage....-for-old-games/ was discussing the ins & outs of using UGC's (Universal Game Cases) to store loose Colecovision titles. So after much hemming & hawing and generally wasting time I finally took the plunge into UGC land and thought I'd share some of the results with the community: First up, your friend and mine "Donkey Kong." On the left is the cart in the UGC with a label from ColecovisionBoxart.com, on the right is the excellent repro box by Phatboombatty for comparison. Also attached is the rear of the box, and the interior of the UGC showing an UNMODIFIED UGC snugly holding a Coleco Brand cart. LynxVGL
So the real move behind this project was me starting to collect loose Carts for my collection, and a desire to have them look nice. Now, some of what I have to share some will cry foul on, but hey, they do look nice. I started with my Atarisoft titles; Centipede, Defender & Galaxian. IMHO the original Atarisoft orange boxart is downright fugly. So I took the 5200 UGC covers available on Thecoverproject.net and did a little retouching for a Coleco collection. The screenshots on the rear are the Coleco screens. The Atarisoft titles also fit snugly when put in horizontally in the case.
LynxVGL
Next up was Miner 2049'er using scans of the boxart applied to the UGC proportions on a template. The Microvision cart also fits snugly, horizontally in the case. I'm a fan of the original North American Colecovision boxart featuring the Game Cabinet on the front. Unfortunately (for me at least) for later releases Coleco moved away from this style. For Congo Bongo I repurposed a 2600 UGC Cover, and an NES Spy Hunter Cover. Not perfect, but this is for my own collection & I'm not about to try to pawn these off on anyone.
LynxVGL
And finally onto an Imagic cart. Nova Blast is available on Thecoverproject.net and was one of the first covers I printed. Imagic carts, however, are a little longer than Coleco manufactured carts, and do not fit into an UNMODIFIED case. However, even when they are loose in the case, there is little slippage, and I find it a better answer than having loose carts floating about. My remaining loose carts are Moonsweeper by Imagic (combining the Nova Blast CV UGC with art extracted from a 2600 box is a fun challenge), Gates of Apshai by Epyx, Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator (The Coleco boxart is some of the best Star Trek box art, but I can't find a decent high res, non-watermarked scan to use for it. I dislike the Sega boxart, but it will look OK next to Congo Bongo if I have to go that route), Frogger, Gorf, Tutankham and Super Action Baseball. Anyone in the community have a decent Baseball Boxart they've done? With a little effort, this is a great way to plus your collection. LynxVGL
annnnd colecoboxart.com comes through AGAIN with just adding a scan of Moonsweeper! Yes!
Crapahute
Congrats, that's a fine work. Next one on colecoboxart.com should be Quest for Quintana Roo. I just want to recall that the scans on the site are raw, simple scans with no improvement. Most of them need to be reworked for a printing purpose. When I prepared some for printing I called them "repro".
LynxVGL
My boxing on my loose carts (1st pass) is done. One or two last updates for those that are interested: Gateway to Apshai: This is my lone Epyx Cart. The Epyx carts seem to be a titch smaller than regular Coleco Brand cases, so the cart is sloppy inside the unmodified UGC (like the Imagic Carts.) This UGC took a 5200 UGC for Gateway from the Coverproject, and retouched to lose the Atari branding, and adding some Colecovision branding. LynxVGL
But the real story on this project is the box for a cart that has been looking for a safe home ever since I picked up my Super Action Controllers back in the day, Super Action Baseball. The front cover art is from the Intellivision Major League Baseball, and the rear copy is from original Coleco ad copy for SAB. The UGC uses a Rocky Super Action cover from the CoverProject for layout purposes.
