model 2 genesis with power supply problem

My model 2 genesis has a problem with the power supply connector. If it gets moved or knocked the power goes off and I have to jiggle the power connector sometimes to get it to work. Most of the time it works. Is this common with model 2s ?

I'm no expert, but I had this happen to a model 2 Genny as well. The solder had cracked or come loose where the connector was soldered to the board. Even with my ham-fisted "technique" and lack of experience, I was easily able to "reflow" the solder in the joint and fix it. That's likely what it is. Although I had not heard of anybody else having this issue, both yours and mine make 2!!!

It's an easy fix.

I had this happen to two model 1 systems. One was just cracked solder (my original, bought new), the second one had ripped pads (bought used for a friend).

My original lasted about 5 years when it developed this, reflowed it and has worked ever since.

Yeah I've had that happen before. The other big issue with model 2s are failing reset buttons.

The model 1 are good for this even new, my original model 1 reset button never worked until I fixed the issue I mentioned above. I only found out that it worked after I fixed it due to a friend pressing it, before that it never worked. It had to be a alignment related issue. The second ones reset button didn't work either, and didn't work after I fixed it either. Most of my friends owned a model 1 with a reset button that did not work.

My model 2's power jack broke of, it can not be fixed. Any where I can get a replacement? eBay was a no go.

Not a total waste. Follow the traces and solder new wires(leads) from them to your power supply. Just make sure you observe polarity. You'll have a tethered system from here on out, but better than nothing!

It was totally shot pulling it off. There has to be someone selling one out there somewhere.

One of these should be correct (EIAJ-03 size)

Although I have seen some people say that it is EIAJ-02 size so im not 100% sure, but i think that EIAJ-03 is correct.

I would order right now if you were 100% sure, and which one of those four is the right model 2 one? Anyone?

look at yours and compare to the data sheets. my best guess is this would be the right one:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/CUI/PJ1-021/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtnOp%252bbbqA009lE0K0K%252bPZGlE0pbmuf9ygyMI6o1CyX6A%3d%3d

I am about 99% sure its right size (EIAJ-03). This would be if the OD of the connector is 4.75mm and not 4.0mm. If you have something you can measure the plug on the power adapter with to verify you can be certain. I should have measured mine this morning when I was home, but i forgot.

edit:

Found this which verifies the EIAJ-03 size

Thank you for your help, I just ordered it for $8.72 shipped. I will let everyone how it turns out.

It sucks when the shipping price is almost 10x what the price of the part is! It should be right if you verified the footprint was the same.

I reflowed the solder and it works jiust that hitting the power connector causes it to go out. I have a model 1 now but it has a third party power supply causing it to make a buzzing sound when playing games.

Are you sure that the problem is the Motherboard DC Connector? Since you are at it, cut the DC Connector of that third party adapter and solder a new one.

Welp, I got a model 2 a few years ago that had really been abused and gotten dirty. I opened it up to discover that someone had already attempted to repair the power jack by running wires to some open points on the board from the negative and positive pins on the jack. It was an imprecise repair, but I left it in place until today . . .

I bought the correct jack from Console 5. This thread is a testament to how easy they've made it to find the correct parts for our old consoles - thanks Console5!

I de-soldered the old jack which had cracked plastic in several places and was just generally quite dirty. It went in the trash, and I soldered the new one into place. It now has a nice tight fit and works every time, but I did not think to put any silicone between it and the board. That would surely help with movement over time.

Anyway, I fixed a Genesis today and just wanted to tell someone about it.
