I have a light sixer. I want a heavy sixer too. Is it worth it, or should I just be happy with what I got?

Well, it was worth it to me because I only had Tele-Games consoles.  I had a 4-switch when I was a kid and, later, bought a six-switch in a thrift store.  I always wanted a wood-grain real McCoy Atari and, since I shopped eBay and had a good choice, why not get a Heavy Sixer?  If you have those same feelings than, yes, it's worth it.  I have heard that the picture quality is better on a Heavy Sixer.  The games look great on my console anyway.

You're not a REAL collector unless one of your goals is to have one of each type of 2600 console (and don't forget the refurbished variations).

My mom won't let me have it >_< She says it's greedy of me to want one, and she's the one who I'd borrow the $$$ from. >!< Yeah, I'm 22 and live with my mom. Got a problem? Still would like that heavy sixer off ebay.

I suggest enjoying what you've got until you have some cash of your own. Then you can buy up all the antique electronics you can fit into your living space until you start to feel choked by their steadily increasing real estate in your surroundings. That's what I did anyway.

It's very worth it,only  if you can afford one .Heavy sixers I noticed are much more expensive than 4-switchers.

Planning to buy one sometime in the  future though, but I'm really happy with my 4-switch Woodgrain and Vader. But yea it's also very worth it if you actually end up playing it lol although I do understand getting one for collector's purpose.

Sounds like it's time to catalog all of your mom's "greedy" possessions and prepare your counterpoint.

But ... as it sounds like you don't have much money, I'm sure that cash could be spent in better says than on a heavy sixer.  Your light sixer will do fine until you have more cash flowing in.

An alternative is that you could sell your light sixer and use the money toward a heavy.

CristaliaMi, assuming the heavy sixer works to your satisfaction, you can sell off your other 2600. IIRC a lot of the weight of the heavy sixer was due to the shielding that protects one from electro-magnetic radiation. Atari was able to lighten the shielding somehow, but I think it was also finding cheaper ways to manufacture all the other parts in the unit, which tended to make it lighter.

Sometimes I've thought that the original units and parts were better and the changes were cost-cutting and made subsequent 2600s not just cheaper but lower quality. However I wouldn't actually know that and I could be wrong. I suppose we'd be able to tell by failure statistics but nobody does such a thing that I know.

Actually, there is no difference in the metal shielding between a light and a heavy sixer.  The difference in weight is primarily in the bottom half of the plastic chassis.

The metal shielding was changed when they went from the sixers to the fours.

If I came across a heavy, and the price was right, I'd grab it.

Otherwise, I wouldn't make an effort to get one.

I have several 2600s, all work. My heart is with the four-toggle woodgrains, because that's what I had when I was a kid.

But upon getting back into Atari in the mid-90s, I got back in with a light sixer. It works very well, and puts out a great image, but one reason I don't use it is because it's recessed cartridge port sometimes scrapes carts.

I have a junior that I think is cool, and I keep it in its box.

I say be happy with what you got; but if an opportunity presents itself, and it's doable for you, why not grab one?

i had a heavy 6 years ago and would love to have another. but i have 3 2600s,  all work great so it's not really a priority to get one, especially not at a premium price.

Well there´s no "real" reason for you to get a heavier version of the almost identical lighter sixer you got...... But im a bit of a collector myself so i will not judge you if you go for it.

Well, it IS a good idea to have a spare atari. and if you're going to get a spare atari it may as well be a 6 switch. and if you're going to get a 6 switch, it may as well be a heavy, and if you're going to get a 6 heavy, you may as well get a nice one.

Get a heavy sixer, not to sit on your shelf as part of a collection, but to game on. I could never go back to using any other Atari model after owning a sixer, and I've owned just about them all: 4-switch woodgrain, vader, jr, and clones like the Coleco Gemini even. What some say about the sixer video quality is absolutely true. Their color output is incredibly vibrant. My light units and even my 7800 have colors that look washed out and pale in comparison. I've only been using a sixer for the past year or so and wish I'd known about how superior they really are before.

As I've said before, I got a heavy sixer coming in the mail. Should be here Thursday.

A: Sexy is when you tickle with a feather.   Kinky is when you use the whole chicken.
