Have been in an RPG mood lately...

Wizardry V (PC)

I'm slowly chipping away at this one, after finishing Wizardry I, II, and III (all on PC).  This is the true sequel to Wizardry I imo, as Wizardry II is a glorified expansion pack to Wiz I (and far too easy and short), while Wizardry III adds barely nothing new and yet is much more poorly balanced and frustrating.

Wizardry V adds ranged weapons, NPCs with which you can interact, items puzzles, and a HUGE quest.  The only problem is that it's maybe too huge, and no matter how much time I put into it, I feel like I'm barely making progress.

Wild Arms (PSX)

This was among the first games I got for my PSX back in the day, and I wrote it off then as a cheap Final Fantasy knockoff.  It's still sort of a cheap FF knockoff, but I appreciate it a lot more now.  Great soundtrack on this one.

There's basically nothing to talk about.  It's your typical linear console RPG where 99% of fight can be won by just mashing FIGHT over and over, and then using one of the dozens of healing options available after battle.

Dragon Warrior 2 (NES)

This is one of my most played console RPGs.  I finished it back in the day, and for the past 10 years or so, I play through it again every 1-2 years (though I stop just before the last boss as the game requires some massive grinding once you get to that point).  Along with Dragon Warrior 3, this is the game that got the formula just right.

Dragon Warrior 1 seemed like an epic quest back in the day, but in hindsight it's clear the game is far too simple to enjoy, with nothing but grinding for experience/gold for much of the second half of the game.  This is because 1) you have basically zero tactical options in combat and 2) the entire game is linear.

Dragon Warrior 2 fixes it all.  You quickly get the other party members, and from then on you have a lot of options in battle.  Don't get me wrong, this is no Pool of Radiance or even Wizardry, but clever use of items and spells can get you to the very end of the game with no grinding whatsoever.  The second half of the game is an exciting nonlinear scavenger hunt, that allows you to actually enjoy all the powerful spells and equipment you've gathered during the first half.  It's extremely satisfying, but still remains challenging.

Wizardry: Empire (PSX)

Really EXCELLENT Japan only continuation of the Wizardry series.  It's basically the unofficial sequel to Wizardy 5, with some aspects of Wizardry 6 and some other additions (most notably item-based prestige class changes).  In other words, it's the predecessor to the Elminage series (which, if you haven't tried but are interested in Wizardry games, you can get some of them on Steam).

Star Ocean: Second Story (PSX)

I'm not happy with the direction that console RPGs went with the SNES/SFC and PSX (i.e. fixed parties where you just go to town 1, dungeon 1, town 2, dungeon 2, repeat forever [most SNES/SC rpgs], then that PLUS tons of story/dialog [most PSX rpgs]), but this one is pretty fun.  Yes, it's the same formula of town/dungeon repeat with tons of annoying dialog, but at least the dungeons are not just straight lines to bosses.  The FANTASTIC soundtrack helps for sure.

Seiken Densetsu 3 (SFC)

Oh wow, this is pretty amazing.  I played the US version of the previous game (Secret of Mana) back when it was released, and while I liked it at the time (the amazing soundtrack was a big part of this), revisting it later revealed it to be very shallow indeed.

This game however is nuts!  Right from the start, you get to select a three-character party from several option, and the game actually changes based on whom you chose.  The combat feels much better than the previous game in the series (though the boss fights are still total nonsense), and it's a joy to play.

The graphics and music are among the best for the system; this is seriously one good looking and sounding game.  In top of all that, it's got a day and night cycle, where the game gradually changes to day/night as you play, with the graphics darkening/lightening each step of the way.  Town activites differ by night and day, and so do the monster you encounter.  What a game!

I just have the one, really, for Classic Games; I've been replaying Legend of Zelda.  :)

It's been nice to run through and see how much of the item locations I still remember- i remembered a lot more than i realized, hehe.  Nice way to pass my lunch breaks and decompress from work.

Cyborg Justice (?!) - Genesis

Super Mario World - SNES

Final Fantasy III - SNES

Cyborg Justice gets a bad rap. Or maybe I'm wearing some rose-colored glasses. Lots of folks don't like it, despite its cool premise. I thought it was totally rad when I was 12 and 13 years old so of course I still love it today.
