This morning I had a short but nice conversation with Keilbaca using PMs. And we agreed to public it in a thread. It may help others and turns into a good talk. That's how i went:

Hi Keilbaca,

Well I'm here to ask you a little help with the paddles... Yeah, a strange first contact but we hadn't the oportunity to talk before in any thread.
So sorry to begin asking for tips...

Anyway, I never had paddles before, I never saw someone playing with them and I bought two pairs recently.

It may sound silly but I just wanted to see you playing, I saw your live stream with kaboom but I'd like to see how you grab the paddles and rotate the disc.
Yesterday I watched that old video "How to beat Video Games" and the man seemed to move his elbow too much

Do you move your elbow that much?

Do you twist your wrist? pic A2012-07-31_00-41-02_163.jpg

Only use fingers? pic B2012-07-31_00-40-46_823.jpg pic C2012-07-31_00-40-39_371.jpg

Or, maybe, you grag that way. pic D2012-07-31_00-40-19_243.jpg

Of course I used the other hand to take the pictures.

Again, sorry for those suddenly unexpected questions. Any tip will be much appreciated.
I'm going to play astroblast to get used to the paddles but I don't want to get bad habits.

Thanks in advance for your patience.

This is Keilbaca answer with current Squirrel avatar:

This is actually an interesting question that I have not been asked before. :)

I grab it like claw D, but a little deeper. I let the ridge of my fingers, right where it bends at the knuckles, rest along the ridge of the top of the paddle controller. It allows for a lot less slipping and a bit more control.

I don't move my elbow at all, its all in the wrist, and sometimes I like to counter steer with my holding hand. It all depends on how I feel comfortable using it for the day, and how I am sitting.

Awesome question, and it reminds me back in the day when I was big at lan parties, and the constant question that came up is which grip on the mouse was better: The claw or the whole palm. I always have used the claw grip all my life, and I can run around and snipe people very well. :)

Any more questions, and I'm free to answer them. Anything to help out a fellow Atarian :)

That's me again.
Thank you very much.

Actually I began playing with that claw in astroblast and liked it but I was afraid of bad habits... I use the mouse as you too.

But I strum the guitar in a completly wrong way. It's bad but very difficult to change now. These simple things are very important maybe we should create a thread and move these posts. It can help others and makes a good talk :)

Well that's our talk moved to a new thread using non Moderator powers :-D

I hold it like D. I don't move my elbow or wrist or anything like that. I just lay it in my left hand with my thumb on the button and turn it slightly back and forth like I'm tuning in a station on an old radio.

flip her upside down, over your knee, bottoms up and... oh wait, this thread is about paddles - not paddling!

I'll usually just let the poodle jump up in my lap.

D - But with my Thumb and left side of my middle finger mainly. I roll it up and down the side of my finger.

In before NE146.

I knew I should consult someone before having bad habits...
Now I'm sure I forgot some pictures.

Talking about the mouse, I have a pic to ilustrate the whole palm grab.
It's a secret technic you may not want to show everyone.

D - claw style. Can there be a wrong way to use these?

I grab my paddles HARD and firm, with easy strokes on the disc... ;)

Ok ok... I think the pic D grip, is most comfortable to me, my hand hovering over the paddle,
twist with thumb and pointer finger.

Now the real question is how do you grab your...hmmm...
listen for the rooster crow, baaa-cock!!??

Time to pass out sleeping...

I use "D", but with a slight variation on the holding hand as the fire button on mine is on top-center. I prefer the 2nd gen Commodore paddles for their "shorter-throw" on screen.

Just played a couple of times astroblast and kaboom. I played both games with mouse for an entire week recently for the HSC.

In Astroblast I got 134k after a whole competitive week. First try with paddles and got 51k. I still play better with mouse but for the first try it isn't that bad and certainly much more fun.

For Kaboom! after some tries and got around 2,490. In the HSC I got 2,296. Yes, Kaboom! needs paddles. I hope to get at least 10k. But first I'll practice more astroblast :-D
