Is the 8 bit NES RF adapter compatible with the Atari 2600 System?

No absolutely not, those auto switch RF adapters like nes/Genesis were not designed to work with older consoles like the 2600 / Colecovision etc, Those consoles do not have the capability to fully switch the signal over. You need one of the older type with the manual type of switch OR a coaxial ro RCA type adapter plug

that removes the need for RF switchbox and plugs directly into the coaxial input of your TV.

Not really.  Best to get an RCA female to coax adaptor at Radio Shack.

I have found that my SNES RF Switch works with my 2600's.

The NES adapters work by receiving RF signal from your console.  If the signal is sufficient strength, it auto-switches to the console.  Unfortunately, the 2600 can't supply a sufficient signal to trigger the switch.
