Converting ATR images to Disks...?

Recommended Posts

Anyone here experienced at converting ATR images into executables I guess? and then transferring them to floppy disks?

(Or what would be the best route for this?)

I've seen an SIO2PC cable, but the question I have with this... can you just buy a cable from eBay for example and hook it up directly with your PC using the software? Or does one have to mod the 800 in any way?

Anyone write 5" Floppies from a PC for use with their Atari's?

Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

You can get a small adapter that plugs into the serial port that you wire a standard SIO cable to. Those are sold right here at AA. Then, you use the Ape or other mounting software to select the disk image from your PC. Then you can boot right from that using the Atari computer (no mods necessary), or boot up a Dos disk and use it's duplicate disk function to copy it to a regular 5-1/4" floppy in your Atari disk drive.

BTW there is supposedly a method to use the PC's floppy drive to format a disk that SUPPOSEDLY is able to be used in the Atari drive (when formatting, you would select the 180K size). The Dos you would need to use would have to be a "true" double-density Dos, like MyDos. I used the word supposedly since nobody here has been able to do it...since the PC drive itself would have to be a specific older type (myth?).

Hookup is very simple...you just unscrew the casing from one end of a spare cable and screw the wires in the proper order. Be sure to open the info page (below the pictures at the link above) to list exactly how to locate the correct wires and hookup details. The software homesites are available at the bottom of the page.

I have been successful using the PC Write utility - however, it was very tricky and the best use I got was to write 1 file to the disk at a time since it required calculating offsets and such to write additional files.

I was able to write 3 files to the disk at best and then my calculations were off :)

I had an older 5 1/4 drive I did this one a few years back - Go the SIO2PC route, though it wont 'convert' a disk image to an exe for you

So... using an emulator I could convert it to an exe and then just what? Copy from the PC to the 800 through the SIO2PC and save to disks accordingly?

I see the device...(starting to make a little more sense now)

but I see other cables just direct to the PC? (Why would you need the one from AtariAge)? however, I have no problem with getting one from AA, it's just a question.

Also, I remember seeing a site that had DEMO's for the Atari computer (though you HAD to have 320K of ram on the Atari or 192K of ram for the demo's or whatnot to acutally run) does anyone have a link to that particular site? (I'm sure some hardcore 8bitter out there knows what I'm talking about I'm sure...?)

And as far as the 800... is 64k the limit? I think I'd have to get what? A 130XE or 65XE or something that is upped to 320+ K? I know a buddy of mine was telling me that he had one with 320 or somewhere around that range of memory... so...

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it!

That small plug fits on your PC computer's COM port. You need to sacrifice an SIO cable (just like the one that the regular Atari disk drive uses to hook to the Atari computer)...removing the end and hooking the wires to that COM plug. Then you just hook the other end right to the Atari computer (or to the back of another Atari drive in the chain). By running the Ape software, you can select which drive is being emulated, and a field to select the disk image (I dunno if you need to convert the .atr's to .exe's though...I don't see why you would need to).

You can use custom boards to give you more than the standard 64k in an Atari computer...or just do that modification yourself if you are handy with a soldering iron. The highest ones are at 1mb that I've seen...they might be higher than that.

The demo you are probably thinking of is Sheddy's Space Harrier port...you can search for that in the link at the top of this page. I dunno if a 800XE with custom expanded memory would handle the same things that an Atari130XE does, though (?)

Nukey,

I do remember that demo... and it's pretty interesting!

However, the demo I was thinking about was an actual "demo" but not of a game... there was a site that had like quite a few different 192k demo's and then the 320k demo (but they stated you would need to use the emulator (I hate!) to run it because Atari's only had the 64 or unless you had an expanded Atari...

Dude, 1MB on an Atari 800? er.. 130XE...? That's crazy! *But awesome!*

Haha, My XE is bigger then your XE ;)

Know where I can get one? ;)

Sorry for the obsessive amount of questions ;) I'm getting an 800 out of trade soon (it should be almost on it''s way now ;) and I'm pretty excited as I haven't messed with the 8bits for a few years now (Should have never ridded my setup, but alas $$ was needed , blah)

Now if someone would just be interested in trading one of their nice yet spare 1040ST's for this spare Sega CD I have here... (or CDX) with some games.... :) (any takers?)

Cool.. thanks for the info's... keep ''em coming

:P
