ATARI 1010 Hong Kong Unit Help - Not Belt

I just replaced the belts on my Hong Kong (Silver Label) model 1010 which was very easy, however I am now having another issue. The belt works fine to drive everything but one of the gearwheels does not engage correctly and therefore I am not getting any movement on the spindles. I thought that maybe it was just this unit so I opened up my second Hong Kong Unit and the same issue is present.

 

 

The circled wheel is the one that I am having trouble with. When the unit is in use this wheel is facing downward and drops slightly making the gears not engage correctly.

 

 

 

 

If you turn the unit the right way the wheel just falls out as can be seen here.

 

Does anyone have any knowledge of these specific units they could impart to me? I would love to ge them working again.

From where have purchased the main belt? Is direct replacement of the original one, ore some generic? If is less from the original then maybe is it too tight and so the wheel drops.

It is a direct replacement belt from Best.

Can you take a photo the dropped part from the bottom side as to see?

There was a tiny gear that had fallen off the bottom of the spindle. Gluing it back on caused the whole gear mech to seize up... Without glue it was too loose and kept falling off... I purchased a new mech from best and it's working great.

I’ve just had exactly the same experience! The pulley wheel fell out of my machine because the pinion on the far end of the shaft came adrift.

 

I managed to get the parts out. Inspection with a magnifying glass revealed that the pinion had cracked along its length, on a line between two teeth where the plastic is thinnest. I think it’s designed to be a push fit, so is constantly under tension and prone to fail after a lot of years.

 

I couldn’t see any prospect of making a lasting repair, so I have opted for the same solution as you and have replaced the drive mechanism. Actually, I’ve amalgamated parts from a broken machine with a good case and a working one with a badly discoloured case, to make a nice hybrid (Hong Kong case and Japanese works).

Same problem here. Chelco HK 1010, flat belt version. It work great, as long as it is upside down. Otherwise, the pulley wheel fall off. I'll try a super glue fix, but I doubt it'll work.

The problem is a little pinion that is cracked as can be seen in the picture.

you may go the set screw gear route and make a fix, they aren't as cheap as plastic but cheap enough, that and and a with a tight turn of the set screw a miniscule touch or two of lock tight fixed this sort of thing years ago...

Thanks for the idea, but I ha=ve strugled to find such small gear. I guess it 0.3M , it is 14T (for sure), But not sure about the shaft because I don't have a reliable way to measure it.

BTW, the fix with superglue worked, I try it with just one game (Montezuma Revenge). I don't think it will last, though.

I am not that sure that this little pinion gear do anything. Not sure, but it looks to me that it just holds the wheel in place, since I could load a game with the 1010 upside down, when the gear was loose. in that case anything with a set screw or any plastic piece inserted tight enough should make it.
