Xbox Collecting - Hidden Gems

Metal Jesus

Recommended Posts

The original Xbox may not have beat the PS2 back in the day in sales, but it was home to a bunch of great games & hidden gems.

Games shown: Otogi, Xyanide, Star Wars Republic Commando, Stubbs the Zombie, Gunvalkyrie, Arx Fatalis, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Call of Cthulhu, Yager, Jade Empire & honorable mentions at the end.

I really like collecting for the original Xbox. Do you? What other games should be in the list?

You named a lot of good one's but I think Dark Corners had a bug which made it unplayable....(cant remember)

A few more I liked:

Grabbed By the Ghoulies

The Longest Journey

My personal favorite exclusives:

Thief Deadly Shadows

Ninja Gaiden Black

Morrowind

Non exclusives that I feel were under the radar:

Gladius

Indigo Prophecy

Scooby Doo Night of 100 frights :P

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (best platformer I played)

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge (not the greatest but I like it)

Obscure (cheezy horror game, I like it)

Cold Fear (another average horror game but I like horror games)

Justice League Heroes

I don't know if you'd call Breakdown a "gem", but I really enjoyed it. It's sort of a first-person brawler; though you do come across some guns, you're mainly swinging fists. Has a neat sci-fi story, too.

There's also Jet Set Radio Future and Metal Wolf Chaos. Metal Wolf may be my favorite game on the system. Phantom Dust was a hell of a lot of fun, back when the multiplayer was still supported. Single player mode stinks.

Several people have mentioned Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. I need to get a copy of that game and give it a go. Also, I remember enjoying that Scooby Doo game back in the day. If I remember right, it really captured the essence of the cartoon well.

Oh definitely its got a good cast of characters, is funny and I didn't have too much of a problem finishing it. I just remember thinking that it was by far the best platformer at that time (even over whatever Nintendo was doing). It's not exclusive but I think it should be in everyone's Xbox\Cube\PS2 library.

Stubbs the Zombie in particular looks hilarious!

Stubbs is surprisingly funny. There is one scene in particular that I purposely did not include because of spoilers... that quite frankly is one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen in a game. If you've played the game before, all I have to mention is town "water supply reservoirs" and you'll know what I mean. If you can get it cheap, it's worth a laugh.

Another nod to Phantom Dust. It had a lot going for it for a $20 title. I played the heck out of it online while it still had a following.

Battle Engine Aquila is another gem for me. If you can get past the cheesy attempt to give the game a more "mature" edge (bad dialog with forced swearing), it's a solid title with its ground and air combat mix.

One game I want to get my hands on is Wrath Unleashed by Lucasarts. I have the Lucasarts demo disc with it on and totally fell for it with its turn based war game style play which shifts into an environmental one-on-one brawler.

Call of Cthulhu

It's sad that that game even is a "hidden gem"...I'm always recommending it to people who have never even heard of it before =| Though I prefer the PC version myself, especially since it can be hacked to get through some of the buggier sections (though I only remember maybe one or two parts like that, I guess I just got lucky).

Also, I really liked that Final Fight game for some reason, even though every review I read of it said it was terrible. I kept waiting for it to get bad, and it never really did (though the multiplayer mode is nothing to write home about). But then when I think about it, most XBox reviews are praise for games I don't like at all... ¬_¬

I've always debated picking it up. I like a good brawler but the negativity surrounding it kept putting me off.

What was it that kept you playing?

And Call of Cthulu...I have it but havent gotten far. My brain was wired into the ease of modern "autosave" and got put off by the save points. : hangs head :

Yeah, same here, but I was too excited about it pre-launch to write it off without trying it myself.

Well it certainly wasn't as bad as some of the SNES Final Fights =| The lack of a real two-player mode was the only thing that really disappointed me.

But maybe I'm just weird and you'll hate it.

This is a great list. The big miss though is Psychonauts. That game truly deserved to do better than it did. Luckily it was given a nice boost recently in a Humble Indie Bundle (not to mention a port to Linux which makes me quite happy.) I would also add Steel Battalion and SB: LoC. It is an experience you simply can't find anywhere else.

I am seconding Cimerians' motion to recommend Grabbed by the Ghoulies. The reviews absolutely trashed this, but it's one of my favorite games of all time for any game system. In addition to being hilarious throughout, once you get used to the control scheme (it's a button masher with no button mashing!), the gameplay is excellent also.

I also loved Simpsons' Road Rage; it was basically what Crazy Taxi 2 and beyond should have been, it had vehicles that behaved differently from one another, multiple playing fields, hidden stuff, it was surprisingly excellent.

And I really thoroughly enjoy a good round or two of Blood Wake. It's simple, it's kind of stupid, but it's basically Vigilante 8 / Twisted Metal but in boats. And I dig it.

I can't believe you own Barbie Horse Adventures, Metal Jesus. Or that you were seen on film caressing it. :)

Another great episode, Metal Jesus!

I love the Xbox! I was hooked from day one with Halo, Project Gotham Racing and Dead or Alive 3 on launch day. The Xbox always felt like the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast to me, with all the awesome Sega exclusives, the continuation of the DOA series, the MSR/PGR series, the XB controller felt like the next evolution from the DC controller and the further evolution of online console gaming.

Sadly, most of the awesome Sega games on the XB sold like crap and could be considered hidden gems. Sega and Smilebit rocked it hard on the XB with some AAA gems!

Gunvalkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, Shemue II, Phantasy Star Online Ep. I & II, Crazy Taxi III, House of the Dead III, Otogi I & II, Sega GT 2002, Outrun 2 & 2006, Headhunter: Redemption and Spartan: Total Warrior are all hidden gems IMO.

Some other hidden gems that MJ and others haven't mentioned are Enclave and the highly underated fantasy/steampunk RPG, Sudeki.
