Hey everyone,

I have recently become interested into Nintendo Game & Watch, mainly because of all the cool exclusive sequels to real arcade games. I have discovered lots of Mario games, but even more Donkey Kong games. There are actually 7 DK games, but only 4 are platformers! I have already bought DK, DK Jr. Widescreen, and DK II. DK Jr. Tabletop/Panorama is really fun on my computer as well. I wanted to introduce these excellent LCD handhelds to you guys, as we all love Donkey Kong. :)

If you have never played these games before, or don't have much money, I have provided the following links for you:

http://www.pica-pic.com

This site has both Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. New Widescreen

http://www.madrigald.../sim/dnload.php

This site has both Donkey Kong Jr. Tabletop and Panorama versions, and The legendary Donkey Kong II

Have fun. ;)

Definitely Donkey Kong Jr., There is so much masterable gameplay packed into one screen with nice little goals (e.g. hitting 3 enemies with a fruit for big bonus during double points). Followed by the original Donkey Kong. As far as DK II, it was always nifty but lacks subtlety of gameplay *cough*.

Just my opinions of course. :)

Yeah those are great but the truth is they're really simulators and not fully accurate when it comes to details of gameplay (timing, difficulty curve, incremental speeds, enemy movement/behavior, and of course physical control). This is NOT a knock on them at all, but just a simple fact. I think they're amazing and great and wish and hope for many more of them. :) But it's good to be honest of what you're playing.

I know, that's why I buying the games. ;)

DK Jr. requires much better timing in the real thing.

Also NE146, what do you mean by DK II not having subtlety? The gameplay has double points! It's based off of the 3rd and 4th stages of DK Jr. arcade, but they still did an excellent job interpreting the levels! Also, unlike DK Jr., Junior must climb back down the level to get the next key! It really is brilliant design. And are you talking about the Widescreen or the Tabletop version? In the Tabletop one, you also go back for the key. It's not as interesting though.

Widescreen double. And yeah I know it has double points (as does the original DK, and many other G&W games), I was talking about the falling fruit in the middle and how you can hit 1-2-3 enemies with it, and if you hit all 3 enemies in a row, it's big points especially during double time.

But yeah as far as DKII, I don't know.. it just never jibed with me. DK Jr. just was a lot more fun. I think maybe having to climb back down rubbed me the wrong way. You gotta realize I've been playing these games since the late 70's early 80's so a lot of what I'm talking about are my childhood impressions. If I sat and really played it today, I guess I might give it a better grade. :)

  • 2 years later...

I have recently updated a few Simulators of the G&W DK series, so why not trying the latest versions (for free as usual) ? :-)

Same old popular url: http://www.madrigaldesign.it/sim/

There you'll find:

- DK (multi screen, the orange one)

- DK II (multi screen, the brown one, soon to be updated)

- DK Jr. (tabletop by Coleco/Nintendo)

- DK Jr. (tabletop by Nintendo, soon to be updated)

- DK Jr. (panorama by Nintendo)

And the Coleco licensed version:

- DK (tabletop by Nintendo, unreleased as GW)

The released simulators are 59 in total.
