zylon
Play the new releases of 5200 Tempest and Gauntlet. Round ends January 13th 2013 @ 9pm EST. These aren't very widespread, so this is only an exhibition round. Play them, discuss them, or even compare them to other versions; it's just for some holiday fun. +DamonicFury
Got 63,000 points on Gauntlet - level 33, when the game crashed. :-(
zylon
^^Nice. I'll probably start playing later today.
zylon
My old single-dot fire buttons have finally failed, so I've upgraded to the 3-dot versions. Working good so far. 38,820 on Gauntlet
zylon
Used warrior this time: 56,260 Got real lucky and nailed 4 Deaths with 1 potion. using the elf on this is somewhat tricky as the game crashes 2/3 times when I pick that player. roadrunner
It doesn't look like we'll have a record set for Tempest.

atariron82
Happy New Year everyone ! I've finally got a chance to have a little fun with Gauntlet. I'm the proud owner of cartridge #44 (of 50), and must say this is one Grand effort by ziggystar . Now that I've figured out how to beat 'death' and get past level 4, it's really starting to get interesting. I don't remember (NES ver.) level 5 being a time-limited treasure room with special music, but alas it is a nice surprise here. Since I haven't yet ripped my way to level 30+, there is definitely a lot of game-play left for me. How many levels are there...? So far, I have managed to hack my way to level 7 with the Valkyrie. While in the heat of battle, she seems to have a distress cry which is discernibly female in tone! Another nice touch...: 31,
zylon
Wish I could throw a score up, but I don't have Tempest yet. :-( Neither do I at this time, but that could change.
roadrunner
Neither do I at this time, but that could change. Maybe you could extend the deadline another week or do another Tempest exhibition round in a few months so you guys can play it.
zylon
Maybe between seasons again or as a regular game if enough players get one... sdamon has taken our test-run of gauntlet. Thanks to those who gave it a play and we will now move on to Season 6.
atariron82
Zylon, You're right about the Elf being a tricky character. I had a great game going, made it to level 20 and racked up 95K!....but then when I got ambushed by a hundred monsters..it crashed leaving me no picture to post This could be a bug. The Elf is my favorite fighter, with quick agility and one shot kills, but he is a risky bet. The Warrior seems more clumsy and usually takes two shots to kill. I haven't tried the Wizard yet. Exploring the ins and outs of this 64k cart is extremely fun, warts 'n all. It's not perfect, but seems to be about 95% or more. I vote for keeping this exhibition open for a little while longer, or just pinning a "test thread" for Gauntlet. When Tempest finally reaches the store, alot more of us will have it, and that should warrant a test thread as well. That title should drum up quite a bit of interest since Atarians have been waiting for oh....about 28 years for its arrival!

I posted my best score, despite the lack of a picture. If Zylon is willing, I think you should take the lead position in this round. Great score! It took me a lot more levels to make much less points! This game seems VERY susceptible to crashes as you get into the later levels, which is really a shame. Otherwise, I quite like it! After a few months of availability, perhaps we can just do Tempest as a regular round? I suspect most 5200 players will be buying that one! zylon
Feel free to play on then. This is only an exhibition round, so I'll allow atariron82's claimed score. As for Tempest, I could plan something for late in the season, if players buy it. I'm still waiting for a cart-only release under $50...
zylon
I've also been contemplating a 10-round real hardware only mini-season for those who are into that. You'd have to use a real 5200 , carts, and controller(s).

zylon
Original CX-52's only? That could be interesting! That's correct. No aftermarket, no emulation, A8 substitutes, trick controllers, and no aftermarket stuff. Only games available in 1980's and equipment sold by Atari. [d2f]Iggy*SJB
Wait..... where did you guys get ahold of Gauntlet for the 5200? There isn't even a record of it in the AA Database!

+Cafeman
We should have another Tempest 5200 competition now that more will own it. I love it! But it's tough so I'm not sure my score will compete. BTW, can anybody give a comparison to the new Gauntlet for 5200, vs the A8 version (was it from Mindscape?) in the 80's? zylon
5200 Tempest will be in the polls for regular HSC Season 7. Gauntlet will not unless either the ROM is released , or more carts made.
