Albert
Look what I received today: I have a decent collection of US Ultima releases (games, clue books, novels) as well as various Japanese releases, but dear lord this book frightens me. It is over 800 pages and covers nearly 2,000 items... ..Al

If by "newer Ultimas" you mean Ultima Online, there's actually a SEPARATE book about that: Ultima Online: The Ultimate Collector's Guide: 2013 Edition I haven't dared purchase that one yet. ..Al

Albert
I only have atari consoles and a poor neglected 800XL You could play Ultimas 1 - 4 on the XL, although you'd need some way to load the games into them. It's easier to play on emulation. I'd like to go through all the games again, starting with Akalabeth, especially as I never played and/or finished Ultima V, VIII and IX. I did start Ultima VIII, but got so frustrated with random death and the jumping puzzles (new "features" in Ultima VIII) that I just gave up on the game. A patch was later released that dealt with these issues, but I never went back. Ultima VII (Parts 1 and 2) were absolutely fantastic and the pinnacle of the Ultima games in my opinion. So the sequel was a disaster. Origin was too ambitious with Ultima IX: Ascension, and quite a bit of story was cut from the game. I have an early design document somewhere (it's printed and massive, I got it from one of the team members) and it's really a shame that the game was gutted so much. When Ultima IX came out, I didn't have a computer powerful enough to play it. It's possible nobody had a computer powerful enough to play it at the time--Origin went from a 2D isometric engine to a full-blown 3D game. Ultima IX, like VIII, was later patched to fix various problems, but I never went back and played that one either. So I have some holes I need to fill in my Ultima play-a-thology. The funny thing is I just finished building a bad-ass gaming PC (something I haven't done in a long time), and now I want to play the Ultima games on it. LOL. ..Al

Yes.. ..And I just learned that Arx Fatalis is the spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld III. Apparently it was intended to be a sequel, but the team was unable to get the license from Electronic Arts. I will definitely need to play this! ..Al

I watched a friend play that (DMoMM), and I said "This reminds me a lot of Ultima Underworld." Little did I know... ¬_¬ Thanks for the tip! That's a newer game, looks like it came out in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and PC, so it's pretty inexpensive. Original boxed copies (not the later DVD case) of Arx Fatalis are pretty expensive, but there's also an Xbox version that's less. Of course I want the PC version.. Interesting that Dark Messiah is a Might and Magic game. I played a few of those, as well as the original Heroes of Might and Magic game, which was a lot of fun. Haven't played anything more recent than that. ..Al
