stringfellow
I have been wanting a dedicated mame setup for a while but don't want to deal with having to deal with where to store another PC. I have heard that you can run MAME on a PS2 and I figured that would be perfect for me since I have a PS2 already (2 actually one original and one chipped slim). Problem is everything I have found online is vague on how to do this. Any help would be great.
Hatta
The xbox is a much better choice for this. PS2 homebrew did not get much attention at all because of the weird architecture. The original xbox is still an actively developed platform though. Buy a $20 xbox, soft mod it and run CoinOps on it.
stringfellow
I thought about but I am slowly running out of space and would prefer not to get another console if I don't have to .

ProperRogue
MAME on the PS2 is so unbearably slow, it's not even funny. Only a handful of games run at full speed, and by handful, I mean less than a dozen. Even then, the only ones that ran decent were the vertical oriented games from the early 80's. Believe me, I tried, as I too was excited over the the idea of using my PS2 as a powerful emulation machine. Bottom line is, you're better off getting some of the arcade compilations (Namco, Capcom, SNK...) if you're set on using the PS2 exclusively. If not, the xbox as mentioned above is probably you're safest bet.

jhd
How is the PS 2 for emulating other 8-bit consoles (e.g. NES, Colecovision)?
