Retron 4 (console for snes\nes\genny etc)

^^The emote indicates skepticism. Because everyone knows there's no source of info more reliable than Facebook. No offense, but I'm sure everyone has a buddy whose heard it from someone else who has connections to an industry insider with access to information the rest of the world doesn't know about yet. After all, that's how rumours get started... :ponder:

The friend on Facebook said he saw it on their press conference video. It also turned out he was telling the truth (StoneAgeGamer backed this up). I understand what you are saying (internet rumors and all), but I've been gaming since 1979 (and retro gaming since founding Zap! in 1991), and would not have said anything if it were someone I didn't trust.

Sorry but when you said Facebook, it's easy to simply discredit the whole statement since any crank can post anything on social media. Reworded, it adds a bit of legitamacy to your statement when you cite the source. I'm assuming the press conference was not public or I'd expect a video link.

I don't have a horse in the race, I hope the retron 5 and future products succeed because that gives us, the consumers, more choices. The dos machine is very intriguing to me actually

Unless the few retrogaming console makers decide that this is just 'easier' for them to put these out than releasing updated 'OAC' clone hardware and never do that again.

If the retron is good enough for the 'clueless dad' crowd it could be a real problem.

My setup has ~22ms of lag to get 240p/480i upscaled to HD monitor native resolution. It's not perfect (1-2 frames from it, in fact), but it does handle okay, and I'd really like to know how it compares to this android(?) hardware. My guess is that the software emu will still do poorly, but that's all prejudice.

Here's the information I have found with the provided video of said conference.

Well that's normally not how companies usually work. You got to keep things in the pipeline. The reason it was announced is because they were at MGC. When you spend a bunch of money to go to a convention you usually want to promote as many things as possible. You also want to create some hype for future products, it allows you to gauge interest.

People are acting like they somehow are getting scammed by Hyperkin or something. Products get pushed back all the time, people are making a bigger deal out of it than it really is. If you pre-ordered an R5 and don't want one anymore then ask for your money back from the vendor you purchased it from.

People are also defending it a bit more than needed. They made statements and failed to stand by it - more than once now. Doesn't mean pre-order customers don't want it. It means people have a reason to be concerned and disappointed.

I appreciate Stoneagegamers communication during this whole process. During the first delay I received an email giving notice of the change in expected dates and an option to cancel. A+

I've got too much riding on Retron5 to cancel now. I've got a solid homebrew collection; it will be interesting to see what works and what doesn't. Also if someone compiles a list of known games that have issues with popular EMUs, please let me know. If I find 'em at my local Game-X-Change for cheap, I'll test 'em out. People say Speedy Gonzales crashes at a specific point on most emulators, but I've heard it's not that great and you have to play through most of the game to get to the part where it crashes. I'm more interested in stuff where you just pop it in and load the title to see if the Retron chokes on it. If there's any stuff besides obscure Famicom or unlicensed games that use one-off mappers/expantion chips, please let me know (I'm not importing obscure stuff I have no interest in playing like say Lagrange Point, just to see if it loads on Retron5 or not). I did pick up a copy of GBA video Shrek 2 for cheap. It won't run on official GBA Player and someone complained that GBA games take up to five minutes to load. Those video carts are some of the largest GBA ever made, and will probably look like ass @160p on any HD screen, not to mention being a 90+ minute movie compressed to fit on a 32Mbyte cart. That's terribly low bit rate IMO. Nonetheless I want to measure loading times to see if the long wait rumours are true.

Ass-u-mi-ng makes an ass out of you and me. Clip is around 9:08 where he guarantees its release within 30 days.

I've got an easy one if you've got the time. I'm interested in how punchout compares in terms of perceived difficulty. Because of its split-second timing, it's pretty good for testing latency from controllers all the way to the screen. A real NES will probably lag a couple frames in the video conversion process alone and I want to know if this thing can keep up with that.

I don't need anything scientific, just give one a shot and see if the other is noticeably harder/easier.

Or heck, anything that requires quick movement that you're pretty good at. Super C is actually the easiest one for me to see problems with. Mostly because I'm always terrible at punchout ;)

Sorry dude. I did finally watch the video. Hyperkin apparently missed the deadline due to some shipping problems. FYI, I was on my 3DS suck browser and couldn't access the video at the moment. Also sometimes embedded images, even emoticons fail to show up if there's a lot of elements on the page. If I see a large blank area I tap and hold to see if I can force the image to pop up. Even then they often fail to load. Sometimes graphical explanations are completely lost if I can't load them.

screw-it. I got the OUYA instead of waiting for the Retron 5

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Just wish I could find a good 7800 emulator for it but every other emulator I've used works fantastic. I just bought Ice Rage from the discover store for $3 which is a fantastic update to "Hat Trick". I'll probably buy a few others as well. There's always game sales too.

When you get everything hooked up and turned on, the ouya will display a menu, one of the options is "Discover". This is the online store to download and try games. A few are completely free like Donkey Me. Most you have to buy for a few bucks. I liked Ice Rage so much I bought it.

You also use the discover store to download the emulators. If you want to watch some great videos on ouya emulators, watch some videos by Lon Seidman. Very well done videos and very informative

It's all good, I just hope they meet their deadline of 30 days. For some reason, I think they will this time.

Was watching Gamester81's video interview with the Hyperkin guys and near the end, when asked the price, the Hyperkin rep said "North of $100" which some are suggesting is $129 - $149, although I'm not sure where those hard numbers came from. However it does seem pretty clear the price went up.

Price is mentioned around 3:10

Hyperkin had been saying since the beginning they wanted it to be really, really close to $100, so changing their pricing language even a little is really significant. I think you're right, $129-$150, though some vendors may be able to get the price lower here or there.

Not the end of the world. $99.99 seemed a bit too ambitious even last year, IMO.

Throw in 7800 (b/c with 2600) and N64 ports and call it Retron7. Now it can play 13 "systems" according to Hyperkin's logic. FYI, Hyperkin's logic is flawed claiming the Retron5 plays 10 systems. SNES/Super Famicom and Genesis/Mega Drive are identical except for region lockout, so listing them as independant systems is redundant.

We've had this discussion earlier. Since it can play the games without adapters or other workarounds, there's no reason why it can't list the different regions (when it makes sense) as unique systems. Again, if it plays all of these systems the way they're supposed to be played, do we really need to split hairs on the exact number of platforms supported?

I think this is why so few products are specifically targeted to hardcore fans of vintage games. If it's not some idealized and never to be attained level of perfection, it will be nitpicked to death and put down at every possible opportunity, business realities be damned.

In the same discussion where he said "north of $100" he goes on to say specifically between $120-$140 more.
