What do you want?

Atari 7800 colors...

A. From a CRT TV...A7800_CRTTV.zip

B. From a CRT TV with slightly less red, more green...A7800_CRTTVG.zip

C. From a CRT TV with slightly less green, more red...A7800_CRTTVR.zip

D. Direct from the console (For use in emulators which have YIQ/YUV CRT simulation), the raw base values...A7800_BASE.zip

E. Simulate a system with color shifts when 'warm' on a CRT TV...A7800_WARM_CRT.zip

F. Simulate a system with color shifts when 'warm' on a LCD TV...A7800_WARM_LCD.zip

Side Notes:

---------------

Three old palette sets renamed and three new ones added. Every group has a core palette plus 6 variations - 7 palettes total for a region within each group.

A color chart for each palette was going to be included, but the smallest most practical size (x2 resolution) would have driven the size of each set from ~14KB to well over 500KB. For bandwidth and download considerations they are being left out. However, feel free to download the Color Demo ROM here: (Color Selector Demo (2003) (PD).zip

It works fine for both PAL and NTSC, and the color charts will display.

Absolutely, there is no definitive or final palette - but 42 different ones are provided here for each region, a total of 84 palettes!

Background Details:

---------- -------

If interested in "why" this update, in part it is due to the error I mentioned earlier with starting with a PAL base and trying to create NTSC palettes from it. I ensured the front end (technically accurate 'raw' values) were set to the respective region after figuring out my error, but forgot to fix the back end (conversion to CRT).

It resulted in an overall redder palette for FINAL (Which was renamed to the CRTTVR), that is within the reasonable tolerance shift, and of course allowed for yet another CRT palette to be a 'truer' less red/more green palette (CRTTVG). The former less red more green palette, ALT_FINAL is actually the neutral and renamed accordingly (CRTTV).

The other two new palettes incorporate work in previous threads in harmony with a request fulfillment (WARM_LCD) as well as my own personal drive to achieve the color shift palette that has been documented and captured (WARM_CRT).

G. Atari 7800 colors from a CRT TV with a stronger blue ...A7800_CRTTVB.zip

H. Atari 7800 colors from a CRT TV with a stronger blue, less red, more green... A7800_CRTTVBG.zip

I. Atari 7800 colors from a CRT TV with a stronger blue, more red, less green... A7800_CRTTVBR.zip

J. Atari 7800 colors with aged capacitors on a CRT...A7800_AGECAP_CRT.zip

K. Atari 7800 colors with aged capacitors on a LCD TV...A7800_AGECAP_LCDTV.zip

Side Notes:

--------------

As you probably noticed in the first post, we paid attention to green and red, but no mention of blue. Blue gets more than its share here along with some additional palettes.

Continuing with the first post you have a core with 6 varieties for a total of 7 palettes for each region under each group. That brings the total up to 77 different palettes for each region, 154 palettes in all.

Note to game developers, hackers, and interested parties... Every single palette is worked from the technically accurate BASE palette (NTSC or PAL respectively) that contains no display or setting bias from factory default. (Ref: https://sites.google...ari7800wiki/rgb)

For color comparison purposes it can be presumed that any CRT will have some sort of variation from the BASE palette when converting from the raw video output of the console to YIQ or YUV, including but not limited to capacitors (aging), color pot adjustment, resistor setting, and/or the display configuration and settings.

Letter Codes:

G = Gamma 2.35 - Saturation 100%

S = Gamma 2.20 - Saturation 150%

GS = Gamma 2.35 - Saturation 150%

G-X = Gamma 2.50 - Saturation 100%

S-X = Gamma 2.20 - Saturation 175%

GS-X = Gamma 2.50 - Saturation 175%

More options:

L. An alternate CRT conversion based on the technically accurate BASE palette with a slightly different distribution of blue...A7800_MARIA.zip

M. The alternate CRT, but with the "aged capacitors" factored into it...A7800_MARAC.zip

N. 'Split the difference' conversion with a blue and red ratio in the middle of greatest and least proportions of previous distributions...A7800_MARIAV2.zip

O. The 'split the difference', but with the 'aged capacitors" factored into it...A7800_MARV2AC.zip

P. 'Split the difference' blue ratio change only in the middle of greatest and least proportions of previous distributions...A7800_MARIAV3.zip

Q. The 'split the difference' blue ratio change only but with the 'aged capacitors" factored into it...

A7800_MARV3AC.zip

R. All the palettes from the three posts (A thru Q)...A7800_ALL_PALETTES_20130326.zip

Side Notes:

---------------

The sheer number of options in these sets called for even more sorting and specific labels than the previous sets in this thread.

Each set is sorted by folders: First by family set name (i.e. MARIA, MARAC), then region (NTSC, PAL), and finally gamma value (2.20, 2.35, 2.50).

Examples:

NTSC_A7800_MARIA_S150_G220.pal

NTSC region - Atari 7800 console - "MARIA" family set

S150 = 150% saturation

G220 = 2.20 Gamma

PAL_A7800_MARAC_S120_G235.pal

PAL region - Atari 7800 console - "MARAC" (MARIA with 'Aged Capacitors') family set

S120 = 120% saturation

G235 = 2.35 Gamma

Saturation values range from 100 to 150%

Gamma values include: 2.20, 2.35, & 2.50

Respecting the palettes it is a learning process, for me and I hope somewhat for others as well [besides don't ever listen to Robert when he says something is "FINAL" or "no more"]. icon_razz.gif

Thank you to the community who provided valuable input and encouragement whether publicly or/and private messages. It was *your* help and *your* encouragement that aided in putting this to bed. I thought I was done with this a while ago, but that was before understanding the impact of the aged capacitors in systems as well as the relationship with YIQ conversion and amounts of red and blue, among several other things.

If you want all the palettes from the three posts, you will have 17 family sets with 185 different palettes for each region or 370 palettes total. icon_biggrinwink.gif

No more excuses or reasons. No long-winded explanations.

Three palettes to choose from: PROSYSTEM_A, PROSYSTEM_B, PROSYSTEM_C.

Accurate, simple and straightforward, with three options to allow for slight red/green tint differences on well calibrated CRT displays.

Download them here: PROSYSTEM_PALETTES.zip

Thanks, Trebor for all of your efforts on these color palettes - they are greatly appreciated. I'm using GCC3 from this set now :)

Thank you, Bob.

I knew you would pick that one. ;)

I'm a GCC2 man myself. :)

This GCC set is truly it folks. The last bit of testing, comparisons and input seals the deal; although you have no reasons to believe me...

I'm the boy who cried wolf last palette set. :lol:

Anyhow, if GCC doesn't cut it for you, the other ~200 palettes provided for your region in the earlier posts await your review :-D

Back in the first post of this thread the CRTTV palettes were posted: CRTTV, CRTTVG, and CRTTVR.

All three sets unfortunately have a common error while transcribing that caused two references to share the same values.

Additionally, the CRTTVR palette was 'doubled-up' on the red intensity. This was an error during conversion.

So, I am posting updates to the CRTTV, CRTTVG, and CRTTVR palettes fixing the aforementioned errors. These are not 'new' palettes but corrections to some already posted ones. The same varieties and offerings are in place corresponding to their original posting.

Here are the corrected CRT palettes: CRTTV_CRTTVG_CRTTVR-FIXES.zip

To help understand the differences among the three better visually, I am posting some screenshots. Please keep in mind that each set includes options for darker or lighter colors (Less or More Gamma), and more muted or vivid colors (Less or More Saturation), than what is being showcased here (The "GS" setting is being utilized).

They are in the following order: CRTTVR - CRTTV - CRTTVG...
