playstation 3 won't start up.

There's nothing user replaceable on a PS3. That's as close to a "POST" code on a PC as the PS3 gets. I'm pretty sure local repair shops are far less than a new unit.

There's plenty of stuff that is user replaceable on a PS3 but replacing anything except your hard drive will void your warranty and will probably result in Sony refusing to look at your unit if you ever tried to send it in for repairs. Given the cost of Sony repairs, I took the risk anyway and cleaned my blu ray drive and restored my PS3 to working order a couple of years ago. Sounds like the OP has a different problem though.

Well, there's various degrees of "user replaceable" You, obviously, are high level.

I had this happen on my first gen 80gig a few months back, it was a overheating problem indeed, took it to my local game shop and they used a heat gun to flatten my motherboard and reapply silver to all the cpus, took around a week and has been working great ever since.

So I also noticed that when I turn the power switch in the back the red idle light doesn't turn on. To turn on the system I have to tap the on button a few times then it lights up green, then a few seconds turns off. I think it's a 40 GB system? My friend gave it to me since it was broke.

Stupid PS3 !!.... Well...stupid modern consoles!! :x

Mine won't load any game disc at all :x

I won't buy another, that's for sure!

PS4 ? Xbox720 ? .... No thanks!

Got to give it up for optical drives.

UPDATE: So it seems like the fan isn't working...it sounds like the HD tries to power on then it beeps 3X's and shuts off. Is there any way to fix this?

Also the standby red led light doesn't light up.

Sounds like issues with your PSU. My friends PS3 was doing the same, he replaced the PSU and has worked ever since.

Another Update: Well I fixed the fan, it was broken cos it was stuck so I took it off and bent the metal bracket at the three screw holes to push the fan out and now that's fixed but it still turns off.

Madmax2069: I was looking online and everyone including yourself said it's the power supply, I think you are right because when it turns off I hear hissing from the PSU. Could be a leaky capacitor? Not sure how to fix since I don't know which capacitor it is and it's value.

Anyone have any tips on how to fix the PSU or should I just buy a new one?

Thanks again everyone for all your help! :)

From what I understand its mainly due to bad caps, the PSU gets hot and ends up boiling the caps to death, or they can just be crap caps. The best bet is to either take it to a repair shop and have the caps tested and replaced or just buy and replace the PSU.

Well an upsetting update. I got a different friends PS3 to fix today and his has a working power supply so I put that in my other friends (the one I'm trying to fix now) and it still didn't work :(

Plus I took apart his to see if anything was blown and everything looked fine. So then I took the power supply I thought was bad and hooked it up to my friends PS3 I got today and it worked. So I now know that the power supply works.

I think I've run out of ideas. If i took contact cleaner to spray the motherboard, would that fix it? Also I don't know if not having the idle red LED lit is a sign of anything?

Ugh! Why can't Sony make a non-defective product!!! Like (hopefully) my Vita :P
