Game stores in Phoenix

Recommended Posts

Bookman's! :) If you have the extra 90 minutes and you can get to Tucson, Bookman's in Tucson has several locations. I always stop in there for board games, but they have a pretty good (albeit a little small) selection of vintage games. Prices are a little high, but not too horirble, at least last time I was there. It's on 19th and Northern so it's not too far away from most everything, and there's a Goodwill right next to it so you can pop in and see if there's anything there simultaneously.

EDIT: D'oh! Was thinking of the one in Mesa on Country Club & Southern. There's a Savers a few blocks down Country Club from there, as well, so that might be an option but it's a little further out. There's one in Phoenix proper, but I've never been to it, as the times I've been in Phoenix I've always sort of stayed east for some bizarre reason.

Fallout Games is awesome. If they don't have what you want, ask them. They can usually fetch it from one of their other stores. I've picked up a bunch of rare NES titles from them. Any place that keeps retro stuff hooked up to demo units is win in my book. Fallout has some rare stuff at times too, I've seen ROBs and Atari Jaguars in their. I bought my SMS from them.

Boolmans as said is good. IMO Mesa has better stock but Phoenix is bigger. Mesa is far for me so I don't go there very often. I've nicked CIB 2600 games from Phoenix Bookman's before too. There's also a store in Flag.

Zia Records is another good one. Like 7th Ave and Thunderbirdish (east side of I-17) as they have a lot of retro stuff.

Bookmans had only a single Intellivision game...a CIB Reversi for $4. I passed as I already have many, but in retrospect I should have rescued it. Most games (Wii, PS2, NES) were overpriced. I also almost picked up the Crash Bandicoot 3-pack collection for PS2 for $20, but I wasn't sure if that was a good deal or not. Hopefully my next stop is a win ;-)

Well, I made it to one of the Fallout Game stores, but the selection of Intellivision games was limited. The guy there (I think he was the owner) was really nice and mentioned that they had many more CIB Intellivision games at the newer store, but I didn't have time to drive across town and drag my girlfriend to a THIRD game store :-) I saw a loose Worm Whomper, but it was $35. Also saw a loose Tron Solar Sailer for $8 and a boxed Intellivoice for $20. I passed on all of that, but I did score a loose Intellivision Inc Pac Man for a buck! Woohoo. Also picked up some common NES carts I was missing. Overall, it was a good experience and I officially recommend Fallout Games. Wish I could have made it to the new store :-(

Glad you had a good experience at Fallout. The one on the west side is in an absolutely dead shopping center and there's never anyone in there. Scares the crap out of me because it is such a good store for retro junk. Got my Adventure Island III from them, my SMS, some other stuff. Paid higher prices than online before but I don't mind paying extra to support local stores (well, local for me anyway)

I didn't know they had Inty stuff though. I was actually thinking "he might not have much luck" after I realized this was on the Inty board. So it's cool that you found some stuff.

I don't recall ever seeing to much Inty stuff at Zia (I think the closest they get is probably the occasional M-Network 2600 cart) but you could always bill it to your GF as a Record store, which is what it started as before they decided to add just about everything else.

Didn't make it to any stores today, but I did some hiking and saw about a dozen chipmunks, 2 lizards, and a coyote running off with a snake in its mouth :)

Tomorrow is Grand Canyon. Hopefully some game stores this weekend. GF isn't too thrilled about doing game stuff while we're on 'vacation' :)

Thought I'd share some of the pics from my game hunting in Phoenix.

I made it to two different Bookmans stores, Phoenix and Flagstaff. Let me just say that these stores are amazing. They carry all kinds of media and have junk everywhere. I could spend all day in one. Flagstaff is a college town, so I'm sure most of the good stuff gets snatched up fast. They also clearly send all the NES and SNES games there. I only found one pre-NES game in Flagstaff and it was Amidar (for Atari 2600, I think). Everything was very well organized. Prices were competitive to high (Mario, Zelda, Punch Out....popular titles were priced higher)

Bookmans In Flagstaff

Then I went to the Phoenix store. Phoenix is full of old people, so I'm guessing the yard sales and storage locker clean outs keep the game stores stocked  The games were much less organized and the selection of pre-NES games was much better. In the back corner there was an unorganized mess that I spent some time sorting through hoping to find gold. No Spikers in there for me, but I could see finding some deals if you go regularly. Highlights:

Bookmans In Phoenix 1

Bookmans In Phoenix 2

Bookmans In Phoenix 4

Bookmans In Phoenix 5

Bookmans In Phoenix 3

Bookmans In Phoenix 6

The Intellivision games were priced around where I expected for the most part. CIB commons from $4-8. Demon Attack might have been a touch more ($8, maybe?). Most of the loose carts with manual and overlays were $4. Loose AD&D was a bit more.

So then I look at the games behind the counter:

Bookmans In Phoenix 7

$30 for a loose Chip Shot

$35 for a loose Masters of the Universe :o

This was my sole pick-up:

Bookmans In Phoenix 8

I probably overpaid @ $4, but I'm totally collecting the cart variants with the Intellivision Inc labels over the Mattel ones and I was missing Soccer! Thanks for watching!
Almost forgot, I saw this too
