+slx
My Atari TT has a "new type" CA401059-001 Rev B ST RAM card with 2MB (16x TCS514256AJ-10) RAM. There are several instructions around the web saying that the CA401059 can be upgraded to 8MB ST-RAM by just changing the chips and setting the jumpers. As these are SMD chips and I am not a soldering wizard I wonder if this can be accomplished with a soldering station with a fine tip and a handheld vacuum pump or if special equipment is required. If it's the former, where would I get the required 16 4MBit chips in the correct form factor?
guus.assmann
The correct replacements can be found on 30 pins PC memory's. But also on the 72 pin modules. It's just a bit difficult to remove them without hot air soldering stuff. But an electrical paint stripper may do just fine. Removing the chips from the Atari card is simpler. Just use a sharp knife to cut all pinns next to the IC housing. And remove the pins from the PCB with a normal soldering iron. The replacement chips can be soldered in place easilly enough. I´ve done several boards and had none fail yet. BR Guus
+slx
Thanks for your help! Does it matter whether the modules are EDO or FPM? It doesn't seem to matter for the TT-RAM board modules (at least mine). Maybe I can borrow the hot air soldering thingy. Is there a danger of overheating the modules themselves with a hot air paint stripper?
guus.assmann
As long as the IC types are ok, it's no problem. Theoretically, the chips can be over heated. But practically I've never had a problem. As long as the solder melts on both sides, it's good. And it can be done without specialised stuff.
