RT12 Productions
Hello, y’all A2600 fans! Would y’all like a nice challenging HORSE RACING game for your A2600 VCS?!?! Are you somewhat bored with Sears’ Tele-Games Steeplechase? I came up with an idea: Make a new ported version of Intellivision’s successful Horse Racing game for the A2600 for y’all Atari fans! The working title name is Plympton Downs Thoroughbred Horse Racing (sounds like an M NETWORK game title). What controller(s) would you propose to use?! Either the joystick or the paddle ones would do for the racing portion, but how about for the betting side?! Would the keypad controller that comes with Star Raiders do (it has a bunch of keys that could be programmed to function like on INTV or ColecoVision). The colors would look quite differently than on INTV and CV (the TIA palette issue), while the lettering would be more blocky than on INTV. It would also need a nice title screen.
RT12 Productions
Could someone come up with a freshly-designed box for this new game (EITHER the M NETWORK box OR the later ATARI 2600—red band—version).
+Random Terrain
Are you going to make it yourself or are you asking for someone else to make it?
TheAtarianGuy
Honestly, I'm pretty satisfied with Steeplechase. The game is challenging enough to stay intense and not boring. At least, it is to me.

yllawwally
Sounds like an infomercial. I've never played the intellivision Horse Racing game. What's the game play like? Do you control the horses, or just buy them and watch them race?
+save2600
Sounds pretty cool to me. I like the idea of gambling integrated with Steeplechase or better yet, a completely new program with a smaller playfield (full oval racetrack shown) on the upper half of the screen while below, where the bets, purses, stats, etc. are to be viewed. Guess the b/w switch could be used to toggle between race and stat pages though so the race track could be larger. Option to reverse the track (horses make right turns), would be neat. Not fond of the paddle controller in use for games like this (ie: 2600 Blackjack), but a combo joystick in the left controller and Star Raiders pad on the right would be cool. Or just the Star Raiders pad would be fine too if the game were to be played out by computer only. If there's to be an element of human input during the race, spastically wriggling a joystick back and forth ala Track and Field, would get old. Maybe have the horses' gallop drawn out with timed joystick moves. Edited June 12, 2013 by save2600
RT12 Productions
OK!! 2 joystick controllers + 1 Star Raiders keypad controller, then!! The playscreens will be based on the one on Steeplechase × 4 copies (a gray/silver scheme for the betting/program screen, a tan/khaki one for the dry track, a grass green/spruce green for the turf track, and a medium gold shade/chocolate brown for the muddy track). There’ll be the same 8 horses at Plympton Downs (PINK RED ORANGE YELLOW GREEN BLUE VIOLET WHITE) like there are on INTV—they’ll alternate races (4 horses per race field). Would someone with experience for painting A2600 TIA play screens—please—volunteer to produce a mock-up for each of the 4 screens we’ll need for this new much-needed game?! Thank You! RT12 Productions
The A2600 Keypad Controllers and Kids’ Keypad Controllers are functionally identical to the A2600 Video Touch Pad used in the game Star Raiders. Each model DOES have DIFFERING dimensions for the pad top—so, different sizes for the keypad overlays will need to be made. The <9> key is used to make a win or an exacta bet (just like on INTV), while the <0> (bottom central) key is used in conjunction with the <ENTER> (bottom right) key to start off each race. The bottom left key—of course—is for <CLEAR>.
+Random Terrain
2 joystick controllers + 1 Star Raiders keypad controller, then!! Sounds like a lot of HardWork for the programmer and the players.

RevEng
There was already a hack like this... I think it was called Horsing Around, or something like that!
RT12 Productions
Hello, RevEng! Horsing Around is a maze game where a boy has a horse he gets up on and ride away. A very different kind of game, anyways.
RT12 Productions
Hello again, y’all! A2600’s new Plympton Downs Thoroughbred Pro Horse Racing will accomodate up to 6 bettors and 2 armchair ‘jockey’ players—players will use 2 joysticks, while bettors will use a Star Raiders-type keypad to input bets. The playfield will be slightly smaller than that in Steeplechase (especially if smaller horse sprites are to be used); newer elements are also to be used (starting gate, finish line post, distance marker posts, and new hurdles for the steeplechase modes on the turf track). I’ll be doing a few mock-ups of it soon. Thank You!

RT12 Productions
Hello again, y’all! I’d like to find out how to program a title screen, 4 different playfields (gray scheme for betting, khaki scheme for dry track, pine green scheme for turf track, and brown scheme for muddy track). The game engine should also choose the horse colors for each race, and set their odds. Each bettor starts off with $1,000 of simulated bankroll. The track playfields will have a hunter green infield strip along the top, and a double-height black strip along the bottom; the hurdles will appear on certain turf course races (steeplechases) only. The course playfields (scrolling) should have alternating lighter and slightly darker shades of the appropriate track color (like on Steeplechase), and have a starting gate, a railside fence with furlong markers, and a finish line with post. Please respond very soon with help. Thank You!
