Well here is my outlook on PS4/XBOXone / WiiU etc.

Recommended Posts

Just me unloading, thoughts that have been kicking around my head from all the input lately from media, gamers, fanboys etc lol. Simply put, I felt like rambling on about it all.

Well here is my outlook on PS4/XBOXone / WiiU etc. First, regarding the whole PS4/XBOXone fiasco: When all is said and done despite Microsoft's policy reversal thus far I am still in the PS4 camp BECAUSE I am not sure I will be in a position for either system financially BUT I do know I am not interested in Xbox Kinect at all no matter how good "Kinect 2.0" is so I see no reason to pay more for the XBOXone. They both seem fairly even spec wise in hardware, sure there are minor discrepancies (CPU / DDR3 /DDR5) but meh they are both next gen powerful consoles and really in the end all that matters is what programmers manage to actually DO with the hardware. So between the two machines for me it is more about the overall cost. For the record I have ZERO interest in online / multiplayer games (I know that is a shocker) so as long as whatever pay to subscribe service for online is opt in than that wont be a issue.

Hey, I would consider the XBOXone now since they did the last minute policy reversal and for those that have the money to do so great more power to you I would definitely get both but I am pretty sure I will be only able to afford ONE of the next gen consoles so for now I am keeping an eye on the PS4 game trailers, announcements etc. I am actually pretty happy about that though as I LOVED PS1 / PS2 / skipped the PS3 as it was not an option at the time and since I went this long with the new systems on the horizon I would rather not invest in current gen, it will be nice to have a next gen Sony console again. for the record I had a 360 briefly, real cheap as I got for next to nothing hoping I could do the fix for RROD and I did, like 5 times until it finally could not be resurrected again and I DID like the few games I played during it's short life. Currently my most "recent" console is the original Wii still sitting in the box since I originally picked up a decent bundle. I am by no means a graphics whore since I bee playing video and computer games since the dawn of text adventures. Of course I like an enjoy nice graphics but I appreciate gameplay among all else. I don't think the under twenty crowd today are so forgiving, oh of course there are exceptions to the rule as with anything who appreciate retro and classic gaming not as nostalgic memories (how could they if it was all before their time?) but in the same way I might admire and enjoy a ride in a reproduction of a steam engine automobile.

I wanted, I really wanted the WiiU to "wow" me this time around but in the end it seems to be suffering much of the same issues as the Wii, under-powered compared to the competition, now as I say I am NOT a graphic whore but this causes the problem that last generation Wii had where ports to the WiiU are not even going to be the same game but a far different WiiU version, this would NOT be such a bad thing if 3rd party companies played to the strengths of the WiiU by utilizing the tablet it new and wonderful ways but they just don't seem to want to be bothered. The promised strong 3rd party support before the WiiU launched (remember how they promised it would be so much better than the Wii?) once again has been a dismal failure mostly.

Look, I know Nintendo is likely not going anywhere soon and I am a fan from the NES / SuperNES and yes even N64 days but a slow trickle of first party titles (and even THAT has been really poor on WiiU) is simply not enough anymore, the stable of Nintendo franchises just don't appeal to me anymore AS MUCH AS I WISH THEY DID I just have zero interest in another Mario / Zelda / Metroid / Kirby etc offerings. despite my resistance I have simply outgrown those characters and franchises they represent and I wont lie, part of me feels bad about that but it is what it is and between that and the poor 3rd party and title support overall the WiiU holds pretty much zero appeal to this longtime Nintendo fan, I just don't see getting one anytime soon if ever. So, I will leave it at that, of course nothing is set in stone so maybe I will feel different in 6 months - 1 year from now, these are my opinions and views today based on what I have seen so far, the info on hand and my personal position due to my own circumstances, as always I speak only for myself, it is not about fanboyism but my own reality, my lack of time, funds etc do not let me over indulge or support a company out of blind loyalty, not that I think I ever did mind you but the thought is totally absurd at this point in my life. Thanks for taking the time to read if you did. Let me know what YOU think.

It's unlikely we'll ever get a Wii U. Our Wii has just been dusted down the last couple of days for my daughter to play "My Horse and Me" and "Super Mario". Beyond that, for me and my tastes in particular, there's not a lot in the way of great games for it. Besides, I've never been a big fan of motion control systems. Despite all the hoo-ha over Kinect when that came out, the best one in my mind is still the one that came with the Wii ... but even that isn't without its flaws.

I'm also firmly in the PS4 camp, if I ever upgrade to another console. There might not be a great deal of difference between the two, but the PS4 is marginally more powerful. Put it this way, if you were upgrading the Xbone's graphics to the equivalent of what's in a PS4, it would cost you about $40 - $50 extra. The Xbone has the equivalent of an AMD/ATI 7770 whereas the PS4 has a 7790.

Microsoft's biggest problem therefore is explaining to the public why it's offering an inferior specced machine at $100 more than its rival. But it's worse than that. By all intents and purposes, with just the graphics situation it's at least $140 more than it needs to be. Of course, it's the built-in Kinect that risks killing the machine. Having said that, it might not. People love gadgets and the original Kinect was apparently the biggest selling gadget of all time. Funny how I only know one person who has one.

I just get the feeling that Microsoft are trying to portray the Xbone as an upmarket system. There are plenty of people around who'll buy the latest Samsung or Apple mobile device in a flash. So it may be that Microsoft are hoping to get some of that premium action.

Just some thoughts:

1- I do regret that neither the ps4 or xbox1 is backwards compatible, just because I have tons of ps2 and 360 games, and since the console doubles as a bluray player, I might have bought one just to consolidate boxes. Now, I'm going to be a really tough sell.

2- going forward, it's going to be really hard to get me to buy a system just for one game. One or two exclusives is no longer worth $400 to me. Am I alone in this?

My decision is based on what games I want and what's basically good for me. Microsoft has backtracked on their console which is great but I still don't need it. Not to mention the putrid taste left in my mouth. Kind of makes me want to never support them again. I'll never say never because things change but I'm not getting an Xbox One. They don't deserve a dime from me at this point (especially since Mattrick is still there).

I have more gaming needs for a PS4 than an Xbox One. I have decided to give up really the only exclusive series which is Halo so I'm going for a PS4 and I just got a Wii U so I'm done with consoles. I primarily game on PC through Steam\GOG and the multitude of Indie sites, so having a PS4\Wii U is all I need.

The reason for Nintendo is obvious, I still like Nintendo games. Probably always will. The reason for a PS4 is for JRPG's, GTurismo, God of War, Sony Santa Monica games, Sucker Punch Games and my favorite......Naughty Dog.

Going forward, how do you feel about iOS/Android/etc?

As far as iOS simply no go as far as I am concerned, my wife got form Airmiles rewards a 64gb iPOD5 and put simply after about a month of ownership and even getting around many of the restrictions (except jailbreaking it is her device and I am not interested enough to do that) neither of us are impressed, I highly suspect neither of us will ever bother with any iOS device again, as people who are use to flexibility and control over our OS and devices the "pretty" yet walled garden ecosystem of iOS is simply to restrictive and no fun and just to alien form how we are use to doing things from having access to directories and files to tasks that were always more simple on other platforms. We "GET" the market and type of person iOS platforms are aimed at, I refuse to even get into any kind of debate or argument about it because nothing said will change our views of it. She will keep the device and use it for the reasons she wanted for travel, quick picture and video taking etc, but after a month of ownership (and for the record she is IT for interior health and all her co workers go on and on about apple devices) I helped her learn a lot about the device and iOS despite my own personal disinterest of the device I learned how to do many of the things she wanted with it just to save her frustration. Let me put it to you this way, there were many times since she got the device that she asked how I do some of the same things on my cheap low entry Chinese Android tablet and she is more impressed with my $135 Android tablet for the majority of tasks and how the interface works, minus of course her superior camera for video and picture taking. Actually having a modern iOS device in the household has not in the slightest change the impression or view of modern Apple products except that everything I always thought about them I have now confirmed. ;) I can see WHY they are great for certain people, that simply is not us.

Android:

You know, I was very stubborn admittedly I dragged my feet on ANDROID. So at some point I ended up buying the cheapest low end handhelds, JXD s601, about as cheap as you can go to gain entry on the ANDROID platform and after much plating around and using it for some time I "upgraded" to a still low end but slightly more powerful JXD s7300 tablet with 7' screen and built in gaming controls (it has a mapping tool built in) now let me be clear hear, I do NOT recommend such devices, even for cheapskates like me I say go for a minimum of a google Nexus 7 for the quality and support it is a better choice for the average / typical user. NOW that said for someone like ME who likes to tinker and tweak and even take a chance now and than the device is perfect BECAUSE there are active people in the community like SkelRom who run with the original ANDROID source of the device, tweak it, optimize it, remove useless crap and bloatware and add essential and updated versions of marketplace etc. These are not things I know much about, I know enough to say "Thank you very much!" download the updated ANDROID and flash it to my device. For a person like that these cheap entries in the ANDROID platform can be well worth it and fun for sure. I am willing to take the time, chance, research etc, If someone is not save up a few more bucks and go with a reputable brand name device.

All this means, I LOVE ANDROID. that is my choice of mobile platform 100%.

I certainly hear you and understand that view. In my case having not had a PS4 or invested in anything 360 is actually a benefit should I consider PS4 or Xbox1, for me there is no legacy support required.

The issue I have with Nintendo franchises is that some of them seem so by the numbers these days. Like, New Super Mario Bros Wii U is fun and all. I like it but it doesn't experiment with the formula or aesthetics at all. SMB1 to Super Mario World all felt like real progress. Same for Super Mario 64. Part of me feels like Mario hasn't progressed at all as a series since then.

I guess what I'm saying is that while I still like Mario games, they aren't system sellers for me anymore. Heck, they aren't even $60 games for me any more.

I do think the Wii U is a significantly better platform than the original Wii. The tablet controller is very cool and is definitely something you need to experience first hand. Whether it ends up having a good library remains a big question mark. I don't really care if it misses ports of some of these big third party games but it definitely needs some solid third party entries beyond Nintendo's staples. The original Wii ended up having some fairly good JRPGs so I am hopeful.

I think it's interesting that MS haven't ruled out turning the now closed off features back on at some point! So for that reason alone I'm looking forward to getting my ps4 delivered!

Yeah, and by the same token, Sony hasn't precluded the possibility that they might go that route in the future. I hope they recognize the business bump they got by APPEARING to be the good guy, and stay on our side for the next few years.

I'm not sold on any of the new consoles.

Wii U, last gen hardware... plus an optional tablet. The tablet has potential but so far the things I think it might be used for don't exist and could probably be done running an app on a 2nd device anyway.

The PS4 *potentially* has the edge hardware wise but that was also said about the current gen consoles and many XBOX games were better than the PS3 versions so it's not just hardware but what APIs, etc... come with it and what developers do with it.

XBOX ONE... Microsoft revealed their true lawyer driven f*** what the customer wants nature. If they had their way you would have to buy the console AND pay monthly rent... oh wait... they already do that if you want to play multi-player. The TV switching is a nice feature but my TV switches between multiple signals and I don't need it unless the box does recording... which it doesn't. Some games with Kinnect are certainly fun but not many games I play would benefit much if at all and the Kinnect is always on. Seriously, if that sucker draws power like Microsoft remotes drain batteries it will cost more to run than my LED TV. Frankly, I'm paying for things I don't want and I don't know when Lawersoft will change their license agreement and suddenly revert to their original game policies.

Android. I have a USB stick looking Android device and the new Coolship Android computer (received last week). Android is good for casual games and stuff that doesn't require a huge amount of CPU power but nothing comes on a disk, most of what I've downloaded refuses to transfer to the SD card, you can't buy games on media locally and it just won't handle the really lifelike visuals some games have.

Maybe the next gen CPU/graphics chips will be more powerful and then I'd take it more seriously. But then both these devices combined cost a fraction of what the other consoles do.

If I were to buy an indie game that didn't need the power of the other machines I'd probably buy it for the Android.
