Deteacher
You are a knight flying on an ostrich, battling buzzard-mounted enemies. To fly, you repeatedly hit the flap button. To topple the Buzzard-Riders "the highest lance wins." Two-player head-to-head play is excellent. Game Information: Game Name: Joust Manufacturer: Williams/1982 Dipswitches: 5 lives. Fallout_002
Is there anyway we might consider going with 5 lives instead of 3? 5 lives is the default configuration and was pretty much standard on any Joust machine back in the day. More importantly, the cabinets weren't equipped with dip switches so changing the number of lives has to be done using the built-in diagnostics, which can be quite tricky to do using an emulator. jblenkle
Yeah, I was wondering about that same thing. I never realized you had five lives in Joust until I went looking for the dip switch setting in MAME to change it (and it wasn't there). NIKON
You can change the number of lives in Joust but it takes a two controller set up...first you set up controller 2 however you want..(I use the arrow keys). Once that is done...locate the Service key..(mine is default to F2) once pressed this will put you into service mode...press the service key again to advance to the next screen...repeat this until you see a screen like this: You Use controller 1 right left to move the selection...you use controller 2 left right to change the values of the selection Once you are done with your selections press the service key once more to return to the game with your set parameters
jblenkle
I am not seeing how to set up a second controller...how do you do this in MAME? EDIT: Never mind, I just started pressing buttons and got to the game setup menu by accident. Deteacher
Sure! If 5 lives is the default, then let's go with that. I checked the dipswitch settings and there isn't one. D'oh!

S.BAZ
ok so do I need to adjust dipswitch settings? I have 4 lives but I'm actually getting bonus lives every 20K, just like at the arcade.
patbb
ok so do I need to adjust dipswitch settings? I have 4 lives but I'm actually getting bonus lives every 20K, just like at the arcade. By default you should have 5. At the beginning of the game you should see 5 men at the bottom. Then 1 second later your first man will appear on the board and you will have 4 in reserve and one on the play field.
S.BAZ
155,900 Thanks patbb, yes I actually have 5 lives I read that wrong. I'm still questioning though: extra lives every 20K, is this correct? the settings at top of this page say "Bonus life after wave 5"

M.A.M.E Offender
Holy shit, do I ever suck at this game!! For the life of me, I cannot control my character with any accuracy at all. I also am having a difficult time trying to understand the enemies algorithm. I was never good at this game. It's fun to an extent, but I have yet to break 100k on it. M.A.M.E Offender
67,400 Won't be topping any charts with this one. You have got to have an abundance of patience to play Joust. I wish I knew some tricks. I just crumble anything past the seventh board.
