CV controller adapter? (use 7800, Genesis, SMS gamepads)

I'm wondering if there is any interest in a controller adapter for the ColecoVision console?

This adapter would allow you to attach either a Sega Genesis or Sega Master System or Atari 7800 (or Atari 2600) controller to a ColecoVision. This would be like a "Champ Adapter" but able to use the second fire button properly for each of those controllers.

Features:

- Switch(es) as required to allow input of Atari 7800/2600 or Sega Genesis/SMS gamepads/joysticks

- Keypad to select game difficulty, etc. (overlays not supported)

- Possibly allow the 6 switch Sega Genesis controller with mode and start buttons to act as a CV keypad (see below)

- Comes in a small case, perhaps the exact size of a ColecoVision game, with label

- Rechargeable battery inside (I think this would be required)

- Recharges via USB port

My initial intent was to concentrate on the Sega Genesis controller. Some models have 6 switches, in addition to a start and mode button. In this case, holding down the start button would allow the numbers 1 through 6 to be entered using the 6 fire buttons, and holding down the mode button would allow the numbers 7 through 9, as well as 0 and # and * to be entered using the 6 fire buttons. Without holding down the hold or start buttons would allow entering the standard 4 ColecoVision fire buttons to be entered. However, this is much more complicated, and would likely be a separate project.

Did I miss any required or desired features?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I really don't like batteries. It would be interesting if it can be done without batteries. Dreamcast would always beep because the memory card batteries are dead. Xbox wireless controller goes dead right when you don't need it too. I like wired and self power if possible.

If it must have a battery couldn't it recharge from the joystick port while the system is on? I guess there is not much current there.

I personally like the coleco controller mostly but the thumb controller might be nice for some games.

1 suggestion though. It would be nice if it attached solidly to the coleco the same/similar way as the SGM does. So you can pick up the whole system and move it at once such as when the wife comes home and wants the tv back.Maybe fitted into the joystick bay.

Do you mean something like this but will work with a real ColecoVision?

Something like that, I guess, but more like a Champ Adapter...

Plug your Sega or Atari controller into the adapter. Plug the adapter into the ColecoVision. Now you can use an Atari (7800 or 2600) or Sega (Master System or Genesis) controller instead of a Coleco controller. If the Atari/Sega controller you want to use has 2 or more buttons (7800, SMS, Genesis), you'll be able to play games that use 2 fire buttons. The adapter also has a keypad, so you'll have access to those functions also (not as convenient as a stock or SA controller, but fine for selecting game difficulty and occasional other usage).

Typically I use a home-made arcade controller (or I should finally add parts to my CollectorVision arcade controller). I'm not really into gamepads, but personally, I'd like to use an SMS control stick with the ColecoVision, at least for "in the shop" or for a second player.

To answer other questions:

I'm not sure on price, because I haven't worked out the details yet. $30 to $60 maybe, depending on features, etc.?

I may be able to obtain power from the cartridge port. I think Opcode looked at that. I'll do some investigating. Otherwise, the battery should last for about 30 hours, and charge in about 3 hours (educated guessing with these numbers).

The solid connection (i.e. without an extension cable) to the ColecoVision is something I hadn't considered... so far, anyway. I wouldn't need to buy an additional cable, but I would need a case that fits well enough to handle some cable tugging. We'll see.

Sounds interesting. Perhaps you could just implement the *, 1, and 2 keys via the top three Genny stick or pad buttons, which are the ones most often used. Keep the bottom three Genny buttons as "left button, right button, left button" (I'm not keen on trying to duplicate the whole numeric keypad and also dislike the idea of using the start and/or mode buttons as a shift function, or pressing two buttons at once to encode a function...rather just use the numeric keypad on the adapter).

I was definitely going for left, right, left for the main 3 buttons. The other 3 were going to be the 3rd, 4th, and 3rd fire buttons, but could just as easily be *, 1, 2... or maybe 1, 2, *?

The Genny adaptor would be nice, although since I don't own a Genesis controller, I wouldn't necessarily buy your adaptor. I have no interest in a 7800 or SMS controller adaptor (I despise the D-Pad on the SMS controller).

On the other hand, I'd walk on burning coal to get some kind of adaptor that would allow me to use an NES controller with my ColecoVision. :)

I have an NES controller that was modded to work on a CV. Bought it from someone on eBay around 8 years ago.

the.golden.ax also did the mod and sold some here on AA - http://atariage.com/forums/topic/178267-fs-15-nes-to-atari-7800-coleco-controller-conversions/

I'm not terribly interested in a modded controller, because if such a controller breaks, it's not easy to replace. With an adaptor, I can use a regular NES controller, which can still be bought on eBay and other online places today.

Aside from any wiring/pin issues, the main problem with making such an adaptor is to acquire the female connector that's compatible with the NES controller. Aside from the NES console itself, the only other device that has this female connector is the Four-Score NES adaptor.

EDIT: Of course, whoever makes this NES adaptor would need to make sure that it can be used with a Champ keypad adaptor. :)

I often use the colem emulator on the wii homebrew channel. The wii remote is much the same as a nes controller. It works really well for games like montezumas revenge, hero, and pitfall. I would also buy an adaptor for a nes controller for my colecovision. Emulation is great, but nothing is better than real hardware.
