Make sure nothing is pushing on the (what key is it again to make it go into test mode?) Help key? maybe one of the others...

and clean out the connections of the inner cart slot....

Everytime I tried to play a game in mine it would go to a test menu... cleaned those connectors out and all is well now... for now :)

I tried giving it a good clean inside but there's not change. I only have two cartridges so I tried them and Caverns or Mars won't work -goes straight to self test. Star Raiders (I think that's what it's called) did work though. I also noticed that in the memory test several of the little RAM boxes come up red rather than green (see attachment). I seem to remember I was getting into POKE commands around the time it broke (at least 10 years ago). What chance have I got of saving it?

Also forgot to mention I have an ST (working) at home no longer needed let me know if you want it!

You need to change the RAM in your system. Or clean the contacts when the ram chips are on socket. Best solution is replacing the RAM. I had this several times with old Atari systems. When you need RAM chips contact me private. I have replacement RAMS overhere so when you can not find them let me know...

Old 8-bit systems never die could be repaired 99,9% of the time...

What's wrong with the 400? Maybe I can help...
