almightytodd
I've noticed that most video game histories seem to jump from Computer Space and Pong, right to Pac Man, Donkey Kong, and vector games such as Asteroids and Battle Zone. There are about eight years of black & white coin-op games that get skipped over. I made the following video to recall many of the B&W games I played as a teenager in the 1970's, and to share these games with a younger generation that may be unaware that they ever existed... http://youtu.be/1oONH3QeWpg

boxpressed
Great job! When I was seven or eight, I remember Aladdin's Castle arcade filled with only these b/w games and pinballs.
almightytodd
No love for Stunt Cycle or Sprint 2. In the case of Sprint 2 (or any of the sprint-type overhead view games) I have to agree with you - epic fail for the omission. However, when it comes down to playing the game and shooting video of the game-play, the fact of the matter is my ability to keep my race car on the track with anywhere near the consistency of the robot cars is so poor, I'd be embarrassed to share a video clip (...I guess I could have thrown in a still-shot). As to Stunt Cycle, that machine came out before they started utilizing microprocessor CPUs, so there's no MAME ROM for it. Computer Space suffers from the same problem, but someone wrote a "simulator" for it as a Windows program, so that is what you're actually seeing in my video. There are some YouTube videos of Stunt Cycle, but I don't think it would be too cool take someone else's clip and insert it into my movie without asking. schuwalker
Awesome video Todd! You have one on your video I would love to get my hands on (Pool Shark)! Used to play one at hole in the wall bowling alley longtime ago! Haven't seen one since - not an easy game to find!
VectorGamer
Death Race is another omission that comes to mind. But, I think it's a great video. Just because they're black and white doesn't mean they're crap. Those are the games I grew up with playing a lot of Night Driver, Death Race and Wheels. I still enjoy playing Canyon Bomber in MAME - heck only one button required! I would love to add some b/w games to my arcade collection. That was a special era of arcade gaming.
maibock
fun video - nice job man! Another great black and white game I recall was Indy 800 - certainly the crown-gem in any arcade.
racerx
In the case of Sprint 2 ...As to Stunt Cycle... Just bustin' your chops. I've got a Sprint II and nearly picked up a Stunt Cycle yesterday. Love the vid.

Great video, brings back a lot of memories. I'm old enough that I remember the Sears near where I used to live had an area that had a soda counter (or maybe it was a cafeteria, I can't remember) that also had some of those black & white games. They had a game played in a minefield called Blasto, I had no idea what I was doing but I played it anyway. I think that game was so primitive it was too simple even for the Atari 2600, haahaha. I also remember playing Clowns somewhere back in that era, another example of fake color via overlay. I never saw that depth charge game but I do remember Sea Wolf in a few arcades. My favorites of those primitive games were the ones that had the shaped cabinets to make you believe you were actually controlling the real thing, Sea Wolf had that periscope viewer that was so cool even if the game was basic, same with cockpit games like Tail Gunner and Star Fire. Anyway, if I ever win the lottery I'm buying all the games I miss from my childhood including many of these black & white ones.
Hyperboy
I'm a huge fan of the black and white games, currently in my house is Stunt Cycle, Atari Basketball, Atari Baseball and a 2 player and 4 player Atari Football. Atari Football and Stunt Cycle are two of my all time favorite arcade machines of any generation, partially from a nostalgic view (and trackball pinches on my palms) and the great cab and control designs. Great Video, Thanks!!

BONEMAN
Awesome video. I was born in 74 so I'm completely ignorant to anything that came out before Space Invaders.

It was one of the very first arcade machines I got when I started collecting. Its a must play!!

racerx
I noticed there's no Star Castle. Wasn't that a black and white game too? Technically yeah, but it was an '80s vector. These are all bronze age rasters. Edited September 12, 2013 by racerx
almightytodd
What was the 3D space shooter in the video? Do you mean this one? It was called "Starship 1".
Cynicaster
Really cool video... nice pace and flow to it, plus it's informative. My only nit: the background music was a bit distracting, and could probably afford to be knocked down a few dB.
Vaughan
I too enjoyed it. Agree on the background music. I think you could spend a little more time on each game - but it was a reasonable run through. One thing - these games were often DIFFICULT. Mastering them wasn't an option really, they just kicked your butt all over. Which toom nothing away from how much fun they were.
