Top 5 lynx games

Hmmm, Xenophobe as a 'home adaption', I don't agree with that lol. The Lynx version is the best version, actually better gameplay over the arcade version as they added jetpacks in and a boss (queen alien + lair).

The Lynx version of Xenophobe poops on the ST, Amiga, spectrum, C64, Amstrad and any other version you can think of. Whilst the arcade is better detailed for sound and gfx, Lynx gameplay beats that also.

Some people just don't get Xenophobe, personally I think it's one of the best Lynx games made, because its so well converted from the arcade original (considering Lynx specs) and has good gameplay - reminds me of Aliens.

Zarlor is also great imo - possibly the best shooter, although Zaku and Gates of Zendocon are also just as fun.

I do 100% agree!

I'm always amazed when Klax doesn't make the top of every Lynx gamers' favourite list. I loved playing this on the Lynx in 1991 and it's still title I play most often today. And why aren't more people playing Alpine Games, Loopz, and Rampart?

So my top 5:

...
5.Ninja Gaiden III

Ugh, just ugh. That's like recommending Gordo 106 as a 'must-buy'! :)

Well, actually I do believe Gordo 106 is one of the better Lynx games.^^ At least in the jump'n run genre where there is not much to be found on the Lynx I think it beats Scrapyard Dog, is miles ahead of Fat Bobby, with only Toki being better.

Looking for a complete copy of Gordo btw, it's not one of the cheapest games.^^

I do hope someone does a really GREAT jump'n run for the system though.

I don't see why Ninja Gaiden III would be bad. It's a spot-on port of the NES game. The only flaw I see with it is that the graphics have been carelessly downsized so the sprites that were small on the NES to begin with are not recognizable at all. But the gameplay is as good as always, it has varied music (more than can be said of most Lynx games) and a lot of different level graphics. I played it through almost, couldn't beat the final boss though. :)

1) Rampart!

2) Rampart!

3) Rampart!

4) Rampart!

5) Rampart!

After you have procured your five copies of Rampart...

6) Blue Lightning

7) KLAX

8 ) Chip's Challenge

9) Hard Drivin'

;)

Hi,

Funny the way you present your favorite game :)

On the other hand, Hard Drivin' is the only one "nolicence car" simulation i know: despite the very simple plain 3D, the game is extremely slow and the control is extremely not smooth: if it was on Jaguar it would be a mix btween the ugly gfx of Club drive and the bad steering command of Checkered Flag. I am OK it is cool to crush roadsigns and cows but nothing that much funny except that. Compared to Stun Runner, Hard drivin' is really poor and utterly slow.

How can you squeeze pure state of the art games like Dracula, Shadow of the Beast, Alpine Games or Desert Strike remains for me an ununderstandable mystery ;)

This is the brilliance of the Lynx library -- there's something for all tastes! FWIW, Scrapyard Dog is one of my all-time favourites on the Lynx -- I can't tell you how many hours I've spent with it! The title is a dog on the 7800, though.

I like Scrapyard Dog too but to be honest this is the same game than the 7800 version. Moreover the difficulty is not very hard as the game has a weakness: when you exit an hidden minigame which allow you to get coins, it is always possible to re-enter it and to get again and again coins until you reach the time limit. Because of that it is posible to spend more time trying to get the maximum of coins to buy bonuses than playing the game itself :/

Anyone not mentioning Robotron 2084 seriously deserves a ban. Damn, how I love this game. If I ever get a 7800 I will play it there all the time too.^^

So my top 5:

1.Robotron 2084

Robotron best Lynx game ever? :-o

I can understand some like this game but unfortunately the Lynx version is ugly: my Apple II version is far better and even sounds are better on an Apple II.

Even on an old calculator that game would be better than this very poor Lynx version :/

Generally speaking, I can understand some likes simple 8bits games ported on Lynx like Joust, Ms Pac Man, Rampage, Xenophobe etc... but they do not offer anything more than the 8 bits versions.

This is why I think that the best Lynx games are the ones which really exploit the Lynx capabilities which are far beyond a good old VCS 2600 or 7800.

I have only played about half of the Lynx library, and many are from memory, so it's a personal list. I was impressed how Hard Drivin' was able to squeeze down for the Lynx. I am a fan of STUN Runner as well. :) I prefer the Amiga versions of Beast and Desert Strike (particularly Beast). I only played a little bit Dracula, but no longer have a copy, and I haven't played Alpine Games (but it's on my want list).

Cheers!

Sorry, did I misunderstand? Lynx Scrapyard Dog is completely different from the 7800's version.

Now you surprise me. The Lynx version is generally regarded as one of the best versions of the game. The only thing it lacks is the two stick control, but the graphics and sound are almost arcade perfect. The only differences are that it is slower (at least on low difficulty) to make up for the lack of a second stick and the sprites are a bit smaller to fit on the small screen, but you only notice when you compare directly. There are tons of sprites on the screen and it does only ever slow down on the most taxing moments. Did you play on real hardware or emulation?

And the Apple II version sounds nothing like the original and the sprites flicker.

You can not compare Hard Drivin' to STUN Runner in terms of speed, because they use completely different techniques to render 3D graphics.

Hard Drivin' uses filled polygons, whereas STUN Runner uses zoomed sprites, which the Lynx can render in hardware.

IMHO it was a great effort to squeeze an arcade machine with dedicated 3D hardware in the small Lynx with just a 6502 to calculate filled 3D polygons.

For faster 3D polygon graphics try Steel Taolons.

I fully agree: Hard Drivin' is an attempt to port a plain 3D game in the Lynx but is it enough to place it amongst the 5 best Lynx games ever?

That was cool at the time to see this game released for Lynx but unfortunately 3D gfx are not all in a game to make it fun.

This attempt is a fail because the game is slow and hard to control so at the end, where is the fun?

The Lynx has about 70 games and amongst them there are very good ones and it is just my opinion, far more successfully done than HD.

Although HD offers a race against the clock, if you like car races, you would probably enjoy more games like Checkered Flag or Championship Rally just because they are fast.

To stay in 3D games, Warbirds or Steel Talons are far better without speaking of the hidden game Battlezone 2000.

Below is a scan found on the net from a videogame magazine testing Hard Drivin' on Lynx:

5nAz.jpg

Sorry it is all in french but you can figure by yourself what grades it gets: 60% all in all was very poor. (good games never went down below 80 and many games reached 90% or more like Toki)

As said previously, the drivability is not good (Maniabilite :11) and animation according to this paper is even worst with only a grade of 10.

That's fun to see they wrote just like me that this game was more a race of "no licence" car ie cars mainly used by grandmothers here in Europe which gives you an idea of how we feel the speed demon when driving them (the car not the grand'ma  )

No love for Crystal Mines 2? That game alone was the reason for me to start collecting again after I got rid of my whole collection...

My top 5 from the original library

1. Crystal Mines 2 --- so many levels, challenges, interactions with environment

2. Lemmings --- for the amazing chiptunes alone, but its an awesome port

3. Xenophobe --- for all the reasons stated already

4. APB --- really liked the fact I could drive around that city freely

5. Slime World --- amazing complex dungeons to explore

Hmm, well I haven't played on a Lynx in 15 years or more, but I enjoyed these quite a bit:

(In no particular order, and I couldn't keep it to just five)

Slime World

Elvira's Pinball

Chip's Challenge (Though I sucked at it)

Switchblade II (I know, I know, but it always reminded me of the 'darker' side-scrollers, like Journey to Silius and Kabuki Quantum Fighter)

Scrapyard Dog

Dracula

Viking Child

California Games (BMX only, please)

Enjoy your Lynx!

I really love the Lynx and its' library. Many games I dislike at first only to fall in love with them as I play and get into them. My favorite game it Lemmings. I first played Lemmings on my dads computer and was totally addicted to it. The graphics and music were awesome; they blew away what I had played up till then (mostly Sopwith). Lemmings was the first game I bought for my GameGear when I bought that with my lawnmower money, and it was the first I bought for the Lynx. Of course it is mostly nostalgia that keeps Lemming close to my heart, but even today it is an awesome game. Other top fives are hard for me to pick, I love Loopz, very engaging game play, and Zaku is a really fun (what I consider) port of Zonk. Eye of the Beholder is really engrossing, and Gates of Zendocon is a really fun shooter that has fun extras hidden in it. As an honorable mention, Loderunner was a game that at first I didn't think much of but the game while being simple is really engaging. It poses a good challenge while not being impossible. You won't get stuck, and the game play may be simple but is really fun too. Now what takes it over the edge for me is that I've heard you can design and play your own levels. I haven't attempted that yet, but the possibilities are fun to think about.

I suppose as long as this has been bumped, I'll throw in my $0.02. But are we posting the Top 5 best Lynx games, or our Top 5 favorites? I always draw a distinction between the two. For example, Aliens:Colonial Marines might be one of my favorite Xbox360 games, but it's nowhere near the best. Mario 3 and Tetris might be among the greatest games ever made, but they're not my favorites. Anyway...

Favorites

1) Lemmings

2) Scrapyard Dog

3) Slime World

4) Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

5) Joust

Best

1) Klax

2) Lemmings

3) Shadow of the Beast

4) S.T.U.N. Runner

5) Shanghai

Ack, there's so many great Lynx games, it's too hard to narrow it down to just five. And too hard to rank them within those five. California Games, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden III, Blue Lightning, Crystal Mines II, Dracula, Electrocop, Gordo 106, Ms. Pac Man, Rampart, Warbirds, Xybots...there's so many awesome Lynx games. It would be easier to list the ones to avoid. Batman Returns, Block Out, Hard Drivin', Casino, Power Factor, Steel Talons, Cyberball, and TurboSub are about the only Lynx games I'd steer clear of.
