Skarrj
I took my 1040 out of storage last night and fired it up with the hopes of playing around with my (new) STOS disks. My desktop seems to be devoid of any icons now, no drives and no trashcan. Doesnt boot to the floppy either. The floppy light up when booting up, but makes a buzzing sound that I dont remember happening before. It has been a while since ive used the machine, so it may have made this sound previously. TwiliteZoner
When this happened with my 520ST back in 85 I called Atari and the tech on the phone told me to pick the computer up about 3 inches and drop it. I don't suggest that you do this but it appears that one of the culprits could be 1 or more loose chips on the motherboard.
Skarrj
So, if the floppy drive was not detected, the desktop icons would still be visible? This thing was in my garage that gets pretty hot. Maybe some solder lossened.
Innovative Leisure
It might just be a bad drive. Edited September 3, 2013 by Innovative Leisure
GadgetUK
Probably the floppy drive. If its an STe, check if its a Sony drive.

Skarrj
Ok...case is open, physically I see nothing out of the ordinary. Everything is remarkably clean inside, no leaking caps, everything appears socketed nothing loose. Replacement drive time? I have an asci drive and card but no power supply for it or i would try connecting that. So my question is for anyone that has booted up without any floppy drives, asci or anything else, is your desktop empty or do you at least have a trashcan? GadgetUK
Boot without the FDD connected, see if that makes any difference. I vaguely remember getting no icons when the drive dies. If you have a HDD, boot with that disconnected as well. There's a chance your 12v line could be low also. If you have a multimeter check voltages going to the motherboard. It could also be the WD floppy controller.
Skarrj
Boots to the same empty green desktop without the fdd connected. I need to figure out how to get this asci controller working
