Video
Eh, don't know what the deal is, it's either dying, or it's haunted. It'll randomly turn off now. Which....I wouldn't consider anything but croaking off, but, and here's the but....It will also just randomly turn on. Some times it'll just sit there turning off and on and off again, I've resorted to unplugging it when I'm not using it, but it's unreliable now... I don't know if the new revision of xbox will take the old HDD (or one at all) and I still haven't seen that supposed $100 core system yet (It's obvious it could exist, but even the basic ones have games you already have, or don't want just for the sake of marking the price up. I could get a new system I suppose, but sincee the One is definitely not backwards compatible, I'm probably looking at a new old system LOL. Atariboy
The original Xbox gets this ailment sometimes where it starts turning itself on by itself. First I've heard of a 360 doing it. I don't understand how it could even be a concern, but the new Xbox 360 E definitely supports a hard drive. The sticker on the HDD for this new revision even still labels it as a Xbox 360 S hard drive (Which was the previous redesign). And the actual hard drive itself from any 360 can be used on any other 360. They're all just 2.5" SATA hard drives at heart. http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Xbox+360+E+Teardown/15062/ Edited October 27, 2013 by Atariboy
Video
Yeah, I've never heard of a system coming on by itself either...maybe I should set up a camera (but then, that wouldn't really prove anything, as people would just insist I was remotely turning it on from off camera It makes the eject sound when it comes on though, maybe the drive is dying, even though the games I play the most are installed... Thanks about the E systems, that's cool to know. I've not even seen the E series in local stores yet.....did I just imagine Microsoft saying something about it being $100 at E# or something? Anyhow, I'll keep with this one till it dies, but it's nice to know I can just drop the drive in a new E console if I find one. Hyper_Eye
The original Xbox had a set of traces that were prone to degradation and corrosion. When they got bad enough they would cause a number of faults including the system powering on by itself when plugged in and the DVD tray ejecting on its own among others. The traces could be bypassed with a bit of wire and solder and the system would work properly again. I have never heard of such an issue with the 360 but I suppose it could be possible if some traces were exposed to moisture. One thing about the 360s is that they eliminated the RRoD by 1) removing the ring entirely and 2) shutting the system down if it gets too hot. I don't know how the system is supposed to behave if it shuts off due to overheating. Would it turn itself back on when it cools enough? That doesn't seem likely. Just in case you might want to blow the system out with a can of air and make sure the fans appear to be working.
Skarrj
You sure you dont have a controller somewhere that has something resting on the button? This happend to me and it turned out to be a controller I forgot I had stored in a cabinet.
Video
I only have two controllers and the one never has a battery in it unless a friend is over. That was actually my first thought, like maybe I sat on it or something LOL. But no, that wasn't it. Maybe there is a piece of dust in the switch or something, I'll have to try blowing it out sometime.
mtilly
Hate to revive an old thread but it sounds like your RF module or face plate's touch sensor is going bad. I actually fixed an xbox like this a week ago. it was FULL of cockroaches and cockroach poop . Anyways, I just cleaned it out and replace the RF module and it works flawlessly now. Hope this helps.
