Rally - WIP

Doesn't that just mean you ran out of gas?

Haha... duh! I think you're right. I forgot this game even had a fuel element.

I guess it seemed weird because the two times it happened were just before reaching the last flag. Also, the slow movement was kind of jerky, so it seemed similar to some kind of glitch.

Here is what I have so far. The copy on the back is probably not the best but I have a photoshop template to modify the box whichever way people want.

I like it! For the text on the back, I think you want boulder not bolder, but maybe it would be better to just stick to the text from the original arcade game. In that case it would simply say "Instructions:By dodging red cars and rocks. Clear 8 flags before fuel runs out." They were really good at being concise back then!

Thanks for the input Ed. I have a new born in the house so not much sleep at the moment.

That explains the spelling mistake.

I will update the template with the more basic text and upload it.

I will also do two types. One for NTSC and one for pal ;) Will just be a change to the text where the game can run.

Can't wait for the finished game!!

This is REALLY good! Outstanding work Ed!

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but do you think you could make another game option equal to "New Rally-X" where they changed the colors a bit and made it a bit faster/easier if it wasn't too much extra effort? Your version is amazing already and I've enjoyed playing it in Stella. I'll be ordering a couple of copies when this puppy is finished for sure. :)

I finally got a chance to try this game and I'm extremely impressed. Would you consider your latest version to be a final release candidate?

Thanks Mike. This is not the final version. I've just been distracted by some other projects and haven't had a chance to put a new version out. A few weeks ago I rewrote a core routine and managed to save almost 100 bytes. I've been trying to decide what to spend them on. I started to implement intermediate rotations of the cars but It was looking like it was going to go over budget and it didn't really add much to the experience. Now I'm thinking of spending them on music while you play and perhaps a few smaller features.

This game is ROCKIN'! Can't wait to play it on my real 2600 JR (I don't have a harmony cart :( ). A few ideas that might help free up some RAM.

  • Have you thought about using the same car sprite (going up) as a lives counter instead of using text?
  • Use the left difficulty switch to change the speed of the game. The speed it is at now could be "B" and a little faster could be "A".

Just some ideas. This is a great game already although I couldn't make it past the second round yet. I loved Rally X I just wasn't that good at it :) Great work!

Forgot to ask: Has NAMCO responded yet? I'm very curious about that. If I missed it in a previous post then my apologies.

I threw out the same suggestion back on post #80! (but as a sequel title)

I just happened to have my 7800 hooked up to play test my converted Radica SI stick and decided to check out this game.

Maybe I just missed it in the thread, but I found that pushing one button makes the smoke screen (blocks) as with the 2600 controller, but pressing the other button leaves an oil slick.

I'm going to be demoing Rally X at the Classic Game Fest in Austin this weekend, and I'm working on 8" x 10" display placards for the games. The placards have two screenshots for each game, and as I'm a bit frantic at the moment (I have to create tons of these placards, along with many other items), it would be awesome if someone could take a few different screenshots for me and post them here.

Thanks!

Sorry for the long delay between updates. This version adds music during gameplay. According to Wikipedia "The first video game to feature continuous, melodic background music was Rally-X". So I figured I had to add it. This is the version Al showed a few weeks ago at the Classic Gaming Fest in Austin. As always your feedback is appreciated.

We were next to the stage which made it so loud that I didn't realize that build had background music! I did see a lot of people playing it.

Don't know if you're aware of it, but your radar was the inspiration for Draconian's radar. The original build looked like this:

After some revisions it ended up like this:

Fired this up tonight for the first time and was impressed.

But out of curiosity (Sorry if this has been asked earlier in this thread), how come your speed when moving vertically is so much greater than when moving horizontally?

And I took a wrong turn at the start and crashed into a stationary car. I think in the arcade original, you can pass through them unharmed if you make such a move before they start chasing after you.

I was playing around with labels today and did a little work on this:

And here's what it looks like on a cart:

Not content to leave well enough alone, I tried some color variations:

If any of these interest you, or if you'd like to see some other variation of the layout or color, just let me know. These are each 300dpi jpegs (to keep the file size down), but the original template is 600dpi.
