Boulder Dash (R) For Intellivision

Recommended Posts

The screen shots are a work in progress. The status bar is far from complete.

Rev, there is no 'snow level' in Volume 1 of Boulder Dash ® which is what we are licensed to do.

Understood. And yes, the level that Rev mentioned is from one of the many unauthorized hacks of Boulder Dash, or perhaps something created with Boulder Dash Construction Kit. Some of them had really good levels, but they weren't licensed Boulder Dash games. I really enjoy the original Boulder Dash levels, so I'd be more than happy to see them again on the Intellivision.

They will work like the original. Unfortunately, a lot of time was wasted searching for a bug and then re-writing the code.

For retro games that are permanently burned onto a cartridge for all time, you made the right choice to fix the bug.

Even so, as a professional coder/developer, I do understand that there does come a point were the "time is money" adage becomes important and forces the choice to ship a bug.

Looking great. How accurate are the boulder physics?

I think if they accurately simulated the experience of standing under a boulder after sweeping away all the dirt supporting it, the game wouldn't be much fun... ;-)

If, on the other hand, they accurately simulated the boulder action from previous versions of Boulder Dash, then the game should be great fun...

Ah, but at that point, is it a simulation or an emulation of the original? ;)

I'd typed up pretty much the same response! :D Wasted time would have been if the bug had not been findable or fixable, but the delay happened anyway. There may be schedule pressure due to licensing, materials prep, and whatnot that all factor into the release as well. The hard part is pulling the trigger on such a call -- ship the bug or ship the fixed product.

I still would not call that a waste if time if you couldn't find said bug.

If you lost your child, would you not search for him? Or would you start over by making a new one not ever having searched? Searching for something is never a waste if time. Its what makes us human, it binds us together and makes us whole. We must never lose site of the important things in life, never stray from the course we have set. No matter how high the goal, how far the distance, if we give it our all, there is nothing we can achieve as a people. We just have to believe! And if we believe, any thing is in our reach. Nothing will be unobtainable to us. So, in closing, remember, vote for proposition 52. Thanks and have a great day folks.

How accurate? Not at all, since they don't accelerate as they fall ;-) But, then again, they don't do that in the original game either.

The boulders move correctly but not necessarily the same sequence as in the original game.
My programmer tells me they move in the same line order, but probably a different order than the original game - if - the number of boulders moving in that line is more than 1.

No, this is exactly the reason I asked the question. The boulders need to move in exactly the right order, otherwise some of the screens may not be completable. Particularly the bonus levels. In any case, there is a clearly defined "logic" and set of rules for boulders falling. If you are not doing this properly then your game has a big big problem. IMHO this absolutely needs to be fixed before release.

Thomas; your opinion on this?

100% agreed. If you use even a slightly different logic, then you absolutely MUST test all boulder related levels in all 5 difficulties if they are still solvable. And even then hard core fans will notice that their old solutions might fail.

Andrew worked really hard on reproducing the original's physics 100%.

Did First Star give some info about the logic? Pseudo code or something? Is it available from any of the Boulder Dash releases?
