This is not my experience... but then I do think Sega would have created a Model 2 version of the DC if given the chance and revised a lot of these little complaints. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be.

The DC or the Xbox/PS2? My Xbox has sounded like it's got a dying hard drive since the day I bought it, I guess 16 years ago? But it's worked fine during that time, so I just figured that's how it is. Some hard drives in those days were loud and whiny. It wouldn't surprise me if they used several different drives in the Xbox, though, and that not all are equally loud.

I've owned three Dreamcasts and all have an audible fan and scratchy sounding drives, but it doesn't usually bother me. That whole period is kind of an outlier in console "loudness", though. Earlier cart-based systems of course were silent, and modern systems have either quieted down both the drives and fans quite a bit, or they just don't have any moving parts anymore (e.g. the Switch), similar to a classic system.

Eh they're no worse really than playing on any other period controller, though the Nintendo d-pad was comfort #1 unless you got into sticks.

....

Let's rank them then from best to worse from that period)

Saturn

PS1/PS2 (they are basically the same)/DualShock

XBox-S (the Duke was too big for my hands, but both kinda sucked at the D-Pad)

GameCube (maybe can be swapped with the XB but the buttons layout really lost me)

Saturn 3D (in case you are into it, it was bad in fighters, but good for other genres as it made Sega Touring Car almost playable for example)

DC (close to the bottom sorry, imho)

N64 (the asymmetric handling gets me around the 1H mark every time)

last 3 really are a wash, not sure which one I despise the most.

Two DC games that are IMO two of the best on the console that never get any love. 24hr LeMans and Grandia II.

I stand by that 24hr LeMans is one of the greatest racing games ever made and the DC version is the definitive one as it's the only one that can actually support a full grid of cars. Also the multi-player on it is so utterly well balanced. I remember having a about an hour long race with a friend on the full LeMans track and us finishing within spitting distance of each other. What I suppose gets people as it's one of those that's a bit simmy, but unlike later Gran Turismos, it's still a good game too. The full race is utterly punishing though!

Grandia II I consider to be one of the best JRPGs of all time. I LOVE the combat mechanic in it. Where Skies gets a bit (well a LOT) grindy, the combat is so much fun in Grandia II that the grindy aspect of JRPGs is actually quite enjoyable. Plus you can avoid combat if you want to, but you won't want too. The plot is great. The main char is a bit of a dick which is fun and Millenia is awesome when she rages and you lose control of her. It might even be my favourite JRPG of all time...

As for the console. If you can get a Hanzo (or better/later derivative) box for VGA. I used to have the OE Sega VGA box, but there's a lot of things that don't work with that. The Hanzo seems to work with much more. Getting patched versions of the games covers most of everything else. The two games I couldn't get to work through it are Bangai-O and Last Blade 2.

I agree entirely with the G2 notes, I have both those RPGs and Skies gets grating due to the amount of time to get into each fight, but also how overkill often they occur which is a shame. G2 I like, early one where you can see the enemies on the map and the battles are smart and a lot faster handled which is fantastic.

There is a GOG remastered version of it, it's based on the DC release, not the shitty PS2 copy people pan hardcore, and it just bumps the game up to a HD level more or less. It is $20, often hits 75% off sales on those seasonal sales.

I still argue REZ was the best version on the DC too, that one is a really cool and unique must own, or burn, whatever. If you're a fan of Diablo style and love anime/manga -- Record of the Lodoss War is fantastic and if you know the franchise you can figure out who you're playing if you look at it a bit. I did, so I ended up naming the character appropriately so. :)

I agree on this game - it's definitely one of the sleepers on the system. It's been a long time since I played it but I remember being pretty awestruck by seeing that full grid, and the AI in single player mode is actually pretty good too! No rubber band AI from what I remember; you can easily lap the slower cars (or be lapped yourself) in the full race.

I remember the game being *much* different on PS2. It looked worse, handled worse, and was a lot more like an arcade racer in general.
